    Katie's Caribbean impressions.

Caribbean specialist Katie Hill has made two trips to the Caribbean and shares her views below on this stunning holiday destination. First she visited three of the most famous Caribbean islands: St Lucia, Barbados and Antigua. Apart from the obvious – the tropical foliage, indulgent beaches and effervescent hospitality - Katie defines what is so special about each island she visited and shares some tips for making the most of your time. These are Katie’s Caribbean Impressions.

    Barbados
“The first thing that strikes you when you get off the plane in Barbados is the warm welcome you receive, both from the beautiful Caribbean breeze that greets you as soon as you get off the plane and from everyone you meet from the moment you arrive. Certainly one of the most appealing rooms I saw whilst I was in Barbados was a Luxury Cottage at the Coral Reef Club. These cottages ooze traditional Barbadian charm, whilst providing spacious accommodation set amongst the property’s lush gardens. I would highly recommend visiting the restaurant at Cobbler’s Cove one evening. The food and the service was some of the best I have experienced whilst abroad and the general ambience in the restaurant was second to none.”

    Antigua
“Antigua, with its unspoilt country side and traditional harbour towns, has its own unique charm very different to that of Barbados. Antigua is the perfect place to get away from it all, as many of the resorts enjoy such beautiful and remote locations. Nonsuch Bay Resort, for example, offers breath taking views over a secluded bay perfect for sailing and water sports. The accommodation that stood out most to me was the Ocean Suites at Carlisle Bay. From these luxurious rooms, guests have the perfect spot from which to watch the sun set over the ocean. A trip to Shirley Heights is also highly recommended for the most stunning panoramic views you will see on the island.”

    St Lucia
“Words cannot describe the natural beauty that St Lucia has to offer. From quiet fishing villages and luscious rainforests to the iconic Pitons in the south of the island, St Lucia really is unique. Jade Mountain really stood out to me, with its Sanctuary rooms all offering private plunge pools with views of the Pitons. East Winds Inn also stood out for its welcoming and relaxing atmosphere.

On her second trip to the Caribbean, Katie visited some of the smaller islands - Grenada, Mustique, the Virgin Islands, Nevis, Saint Kitts, and Petit Saint Vincent. Below she describes her experience on these islands and picks her favourite three hotels that she visited.

“It was wonderful to be back in the Caribbean again and visit some of the smaller islands I was not able to include in my last trip. I got a taste last year of how contrasting one island can be from another, but visiting places such as Grenada, Mustique and Virgin Gorda on this trip left me in no doubt that each island has something very different to offer visitors to the Caribbean.

My trip began in the Virgin Islands, where I stayed one night on Virgin Gorda and one night in Tortola. Although the Virgin Islands are not as easy to get to as some of the main Caribbean Islands, they are definitely worth a visit for the breath-taking scenery alone, and I felt that the boat ride over from the mainland to Virgin Gorda added to the experience of a real island escape.

The second stop on my trip was Nevis. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this small island off Saint Kitts, but I loved it from the moment I arrived. The island has a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and because it’s so small, it is very easy to explore and get around. I would definitely recommend doing an island tour to anyone staying on Nevis.

Mustique was my next destination, and I don’t think I have ever been anywhere quite like it. The island seemed to me to be very unspoilt and a short ride in a mule takes you to beautiful beaches slightly more off the beaten track. Watch out for the tortoises though – they seemed to outnumber the people on the island and don’t seem too concerned by traffic!

From Mustique, I went on to Petit Saint Vincent, which is just a short boat ride from Union Island. Much like Mustique, the island is very unspoilt, and the managers of the resort are very concerned with sustainability and looking after the natural environment, both on and around the island. The beach at Petit Saint Vincent is definitely a contender for the best beach I saw on my trip.

My final and probably my favourite destination was Grenada. Most places you go in the Caribbean, the locals are very warm and welcoming, but Grenada I found to be an exceptionally friendly island. Grande Anse Bay is a great area to explore, and the market in St George’s on a Saturday morning is well worth a visit.”

    Spice Island, Grenada
“This hotel was one of the highlights of my trip. Boasting an excellent location on Grande Anse Beach, this hotel is ideal whether you want to get out and explore the local area, or just relax on the beach. Oliver’s restaurant, serving breakfast and dinner, offers an interesting and varied menu making good use of local ingredients as well as the spices Grenada is famous for. The Seagrape suites open up onto the beach, but for guests preferring a little more privacy, the hotel also has a collection of pool suites set slightly further back.”
Stay 7 nights from £1,960 per person based on two people sharing a double or twin room, including scheduled British Airways flights London to Grenada, private transfers and all inclusive.

    Cotton House, Mustique
“As the only hotel on Mustique, the Cotton House really is something a bit special. The hotel is quite small in terms of the number of rooms they have, and the rooms are all very elegantly decorated, giving it a real sense of exclusivity and luxury. The food and the service are excellent – the staff really go out of their way to look after you. The restaurant is also popular with non-hotel guests and it is easy to see why. I would definitely recommend hiring a mule from the resort, as this allows you to get out and explore the island and some of its more secluded beaches.”
Stay 7 nights from £2,125 per person based on two people sharing a double or twin room, including scheduled British Airways flights London to Barbados and onward shared charter flights between Barbados and Mustique, transfers and bed and breakfast.

    Nisbet Plantation, Nevis
“The atmosphere here was fantastic and the staff couldn’t do enough to help. The transfer process over from Saint Kitts is superbly managed and is made to feel very easy. The food both at breakfast and dinner was excellent, and there was a big emphasis on local cuisine and local ingredients which was nice to see. The rooms were very comfortable and quite traditional in style. I would recommend a deluxe room as these had a very nice layout with a separate sitting room and it felt like having your own little cottage. The main restaurant is very elegant and traditional and they hold dinner on the beach twice a week to give a bit of variety for guests staying a little longer.”
Stay 7 nights from £1,855 per person based on two people sharing a double or twin room, including scheduled British Airways flights London to St Kitts, transfer by car and boat and half board.
