  • Impressions of Portugal

Impressions of Portugal - Victoria's trip to the Algarve

The Algarve continues to prove itself as a highly desirable destination for summer holidays, with an attractive combination of excellent beaches, short flight durations, a scenic Nature Reserve, and good family and sports facilities. In December 2016, Victoria, our Portuguese specialist, visited a selection of our new hotels, as well as our old favourites. Here, she shares what she learned and her recommendations.

Which hotel really stood out for you?
One of my favourite hotels was the Sheraton Pine Cliffs Resort, because of the range of accommodation on offer, from one- and two-bedroom ocean suites to residences and townhouses. Moorish influences in some rooms reflect the history of the area, particularly in the tiled headboards. This hotel offers such a wide range of accommodation to suit all groups of travellers. The beach, Praia da Falesia, is also very impressive.
Prices for the Sheraton Pine Cliffs Resort from £1,880 per person for 7 nights in a Premium Deluxe room, with flights, private transfers, and bed and breakfast.
What were the highlights of your trip?
Other than visiting such high-quality hotels, a highlight of the trip was an early morning stroll to explore the beautiful beaches that the Algarve has to offer. I was also impressed that the sun was still shining bright in December!
Which struck you as the best hotel for families?
The best hotel for families with younger children is the Martinhal Sagres. The restaurants include a children’s corner, and the village square provides an outdoor play area. A lot of baby equipment is bookable in advance, such as sterilisers, safety gates and baby baths. Rooms were designed with children in mind, and there are 5 kids’ clubs, divided by age category, and also football and tennis academies for older children. There is a mixture of hotel accommodation to suit all sizes of family.
Prices for the Martinhal Sagres from £2,650 for a family of 2 adults and 2 children for 7 nights self-catered in Vilas Mimosa, with flights.
What would you say is the best hotel for luxury beside the sea?
The Anantara Vilamoura in Vilamoura focuses on providing excellent service to all its clients with unexpected luxuries, such as sunshine butlers to provide water and sun cream, and to clean glasses. Gourmet restaurants, a renowned Anantara Spa, and the swimming pools create a very sophisticated atmosphere. The town itself has a very exclusive feel and offers lots to do, especially down at the bustling marina.
Prices for the Anantara Vilamoura from £1,210 per person for 7 nights in a Deluxe garden view room, with flights, private transfers, and bed and breakfast.
Which is the best hotel for sports?
The Martinhal Sagres struck me as the best resort for sports holidays. Sagres is the most western point of Europe, and is great for windsurfing. The resort has a water sports centre on the beach that organises activities such as windsurfing, kayaking, stand up paddle-boarding, and surfing. Walking tours can also be arranged in the local Nature Reserve, where you can discover a variety of nature and historical landmarks. It is also the perfect place to hire a bike, mountain bike, or road bike, or go on a guided cycling tour. There are four golf courses located within 40 minutes of the Martinhal, and the hotel can provide private lessons on request.
Do you have any tips for first-time visitors?
I would highly recommend hiring a car to go out and explore the local towns. The roads are very easy to navigate, and there are plenty of unique and interesting towns to explore that will make your stay more cultural.
Did you get to see any more of our new hotels while you were there, and which features were most memorable at each?
While I was in Portugal, I got to visit three other hotels that have just recently been added to the programme. The Hotel Quinto do Lago stood out for its wonderful views of a nearby lagoon in the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve as well as the ocean, and offers a memorably tranquil location. The EPIC SANA has a really interesting emphasis on nature, and rooms are painted in green and brown to reflect this. The spa here is Japanese-themed, with the possibility of enjoying spa treatments outdoors overlooking the sea. Finally, the Conrad Algarve stood out for being very modern and stylish, particularly because of the striking artwork displayed in the corridors.
Of our new additions, which offers the best dining facilities?
I would say that the Conrad Algarve offers the most variety for couples and families. Gusto by Heinz Beck (a Michelin-starred chef) is the hotel’s main gourmet restaurant, offering fine-dining in a bustling environment with a display kitchen. Memorable features include a Cuban cigar menu, cocktail menu, and an extensive terrace. Alternatively, the other restaurants include the Louro Portuguese restaurant, Dado poolside restaurant, Dado seafood, and Lago Lounge, which specialises in Sri Lankan teas and pastries.
Prices for the Conrad Algarve from £940 per person for 7 nights in a Deluxe room, with flights, private transfers, and bed and breakfast.
Which of the new resorts offers the best value for money?
The EPIC SANA offers great value for money, with a huge amount of choice, activities, and luxury style. The accommodation is divided between 3 areas, the main hotel, garden suites, and the residence, so there is plenty of flexibility. The residence is best for families as it has its own shared pool and restaurant. Studios and apartments offer complete self-sufficiency, but with the option of using the resort’s facilities. The brunch between June and September entitles guests to unlimited food and soft drinks in Lima bar between 08:00 – 16:00.
Prices for the EPIC SANA from £930 per person for 7 nights in a Deluxe room, with flights, private transfers, and bed and breakfast.
Which hotel would you recommend for a spa break?
The Blue&Green Vilalara Thalassa Resort offers state-of-the-art wellness and anti-ageing solutions, from treatment rooms and terraces in stunning secluded locations. They offer a range of different programmes, along with a Thalassotherapy centre. Spa treatments include exfoliation, weight loss drainage, massages, and facials.
Prices for the Blue&Green Vilalara Thalassa Resort from £1,160 per person for 7 nights in a Junior Suite, with flights, private transfers, and bed and breakfast.
Would you say that it is essential to be on the coast in the Algarve, or is it worth considering staying a little further inland?
Many of our hotels sit beside the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, such as the Martinhal Quinta Resort, which is a beautiful alternative to being right on the beach, though the coast is never more than a short walk or drive away. The Park is excellent for bird-watching, long walks, or cycling trips, and lets you see a completely different side to this popular beach destination.
Prices for the Martinhal Quinta from £2,150 for a family of 2 adults and 2 children for 7 nights self-catering in a two-bedroom Townhouse, with flights, private transfer.
