  • Milly's trip to Sri Lanka

    Sigiriya

    Tea country

    Yala National Park

Our Sri Lankan specialist, Milly, recently embarked on a one of our tailor-made, luxury tours of Sri Lanka, visiting many of the hotels in our Sri Lankan programme. Here, she recounts her most memorable experiences, from experiencing a chauffeur-driven luxury tour, as our clients would experience, from Colombo to the Cultural triangle, through Kandy and Tea country, to a luxury camp and safari in Yala National Park, and on to the south coast and the historic town of Galle. Milly offers suggestions for must-see day excursions and stopovers.

“My recent trip to Sri Lanka was incredibly valuable because I am now able to recommend hotels with complete confidence that they are the right match for my clients. Having either visited or stayed in most of our hotels, I now have a real feel for the style and standard of each. Some hotels were great for valley views and old English charm, some for their distinctive Bawa-designed architecture, and some for their extensive family facilities, and all offered impeccable service.
My itinerary took me along a popular touring holiday route, from Colombo and Negombo inland to the Cultural Triangle and Sigiriya, then down along the winding roads of Tea and Hill Country to Yala National Park, the south coast resorts, Galle, and the stunning beaches of the South West. Along the way, I stopped at many of our new hotels and many of our long-standing favourites.
A real highlight was definitely staying at Noel Rodrigo’s Leopard Safaris, a new addition to our programme, and going on game drives in Yala National Park. We saw 3 leopards, a sloth bear, numerous buffalo, deer, and crocodiles. It was great to interact with other travellers, and every little detail had been thought of by the staff. The camp was amazing, and served the best authentic Sri Lankan food.
Whether staying in one destination or touring the country, we include transfers or an English-speaking chauffeur-guide who meets you at the airport after your flight and takes you between hotels and to your day excursions. This is the easiest way to travel in Sri Lanka, and makes the long drives relaxing. My guide, Anthony, was brilliant. He had a wealth of local knowledge and would point out anything interesting as we drove past, and often pulled over to let me take photos of a memorial, view point, or waterfall. “
    Milly’s Recommended Visits:
    • Sigiriya Rock Fortress – climb right to the top for impressive views across the countryside.
    • The Dutch Fort at Galle – colonial history and local jewellers that sell locally-mined precious stones.
    • Tea plantations of Tea Country – impressive formations following the contours of the land, with houses and villages up in the hills.
    • Nuwara Eliya – step back into 19th century England, with red post-boxes and big manor houses built by the British tea planters who originally settled in the area.
I would recommend including as many activities and day trips as you can in your initial itinerary to guarantee that you’re able to do them. Due to the growing popularity of the country, it’s always best to have your temple and attraction tickets pre-booked.

We recommend staying in Milly’s favourite hotels on a three-centre holiday…
Combine this selection of unique Sri Lankan hotels in a touring holiday that takes you first into the Cultural Triangle near Sigiriya Rock Fortress, then into Yala National Park in the south-east, and then to a leafy lakeside on the south coast near Galle.
Upon arrival into Sri Lanka, travel from Colombo to Sigiriya in the Cultural Triangle, and stay first at the Jetwing Vil Uyana. Offering eco-friendly luxury and unique ‘Dwellings’ built on stilts above the paddy fields, this resort was a favourite of Milly’s due to its brilliant service and countryside location. From here, you can explore the Dambulla Cave Temples, the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the ancient medieval city of Polonnaruwa, or even head further afield to Anuradhapura, the centre of Sri Lankan Buddhism.
Travel south through the misty green hills and mountains of Hill and Tea Country to Yala National Park, perhaps stopping at Nuwara Eliya on the way, or south to Ceylon Tea Trails.
A stay at Noel Rodrigo’s Leopard Safaris puts a luxury twist on traditional safari camping. Two game drives a day give you a glimpse into the park’s liveliest hours, and dining around a large central table encourages a feeling of community with the other campers.
Next, follow the southern coastline through the seafront resorts to TRI on the banks of Lake Koggala.
With a distinct eco-concept, TRI is comprised of just ten chalets organised in a spiral around a central cinnamon-wood water tower. Milly was impressed by the striking architectural design, and how the panoramic windows and pool terraces captured the stunning lake views. Galle sits less than an hour away, as does the quaint fishing village of Thalpe, and the beach resorts of Weligama, Mirissa, and Matara; all of which make for interesting day excursions.
After your stay at TRI, head back north to the airport, passing Galle, the south west resorts of Bentota and Beruwala, and the city of Colombo on the way.
