  • Rhodes luxury family holidays

    Sheraton Rhodes

The Sheraton Rhodes in the evening

Rhodes luxury family holidays: A wonderful tangle of twisting lanes and Ottoman mansions.

With the best sunshine record in Greece, and tourist crowds to match, Rhodes in high season is not for the fainthearted hermit. But get away from the sunburn and sangria resorts in the north, and the island quickly dissolves into a quiet hinterland of dirt tracks and ancient villages, where gnarly old locals sip retsina in shady squares, and donkey trails climb pine-clad peaks just begging to be ascended. Most southerly of the Greek Islands, the Dodecanese have long been coveted as a strategic outpost, and Rhodes today is awash with remains from invading armies, making it fabulously rewarding for forays beyond the beach.
But before you head south, don’t dismiss the north entirely. For a start, the walled city of Rhodes itself, widely regarded as one of the oldest cities in Europe, is a wonderful tangle of twisting lanes and Ottoman mansions. Come in spring or autumn and you can have lovely, leafy squares with simple, exquisite tavernas all to yourself. Occupied by Greeks and Romans, Crusaders and Venetians, Ottomans and Germans, the old town is like a time-line of architectural styles, a fantastic backdrop to an afternoon’s souvenir-hunting and cafe-trawling, with ice-cream everywhere if you’re here with kids, and an aquarium on the shore should the old town’s treasures fail to engage your youngsters’ inner-Argonaut.
Also in the north, just a few miles south-east of the village of Theologos, the Valley of Butterflies isn’t just another treat for kids – it’s an astonishing place for their parents, too! Criss-crossed by forest paths and wooden bridges, riven by waterfalls and a beautiful mountain stream, the valley would be worth a visit even in winter. Come in summer, and the air is thick with Jersey Tiger Moths, drawn in their thousands by the scent of the many Oriental Sweetgums. A phenomenal sight, you won’t be disappointed.
The Valley of Butterflies is not the only natural wonder worth visiting on the island. Twenty miles from Rhodes town, Epta Piges, or Seven Springs is another great reason to pack the walking boots, particularly if you’re here in the height of summer, when the forests surrounding them provide an oasis of shaded cool. The big draw here is a beautiful emerald lake, nestled in the heart of a pine-clad gorge, as well as the seven eponymous springs, which flow year-round, and can be accessed via a network of undulating, panoramic footpaths. While most folk take it all in from a lovely lakeside taverna, adrenaline-junkies among you can follow one of the streams through a 600ft tunnel, diving down into the lake at the end. A beautiful spot, Seven Springs is an enchanting, invigorating break from the beach.
Of course, wherever you venture on Rhodes, long, lazy lunches in the shade of ancient plane trees are a tremendous distraction. In fact, for us, discovering a favourite taverna soon becomes as much of a pleasure as the castles and ruins, the monasteries and beaches. And, as if the gods themselves decreed it, one of our favourite tavernas – Ta Kioupia – lies little more than a dolmades-toss from the ancient ruins of Ialyssos, with views over the stunning cobalt bay that are almost as magnificent as the treats flying out of the kitchen and onto your plate. Dionysus never had it so good. Our tip? Have the Soutzoukakia (meatballs), spoil yourself with the Melekouni (sesame and honey pudding) – but make sure you do it after you’ve walked round the 2,500-year old, wonderfully atmospheric ruins.
Another happy marriage of culture and cuisine lies halfway down the island at Lindos. Here, perched on the hill leading away from the village square, Med East restaurant has the most spectacular views from its terrace down over the bay and across to the ancient acropolis. What order you do them in, we leave to you – but do them you must. Our suggestion? Leave Med East till last, and you may catch owner, Manolis, playing guitar on the terrace with the lights of Lindos twinkling below. Homer didn’t visit Rhodes, as far as we know, but drive the island’s dramatic northern coast, and you’ll know exactly what he meant by “the journey’s the thing”. Clinging to the coast near the ancient ruins of Kamiros, the road climbs inland with arcing views over Chalki and a string of other small isles all the way to Turkey. Just when you think it can’t get any better, you’re suddenly deep into Rhodes’ undeveloped heart, snaffling fabulous carpets in Siana, sampling delicious local wines in Ebonas, finally emerging at the village of Monolithos, home to a stunning Crusader castle on an isolated outcrop rising out of the Aeagean. Park up, walk the herb-scented, thyme-carpeted 10 minutes to the top, stare out from the castle ramparts across the sea, and nowhere on the continent roars louder with echoes of its mediaeval past.

    Our family choice for Rhodes
Here we want to highlight some outstanding value from a good quality family-friendly resort in Europe that not only has a really good range of in-house leisure facilities but also one that is located in surroundings that are interesting, full of character and easy to reach, for all ages of children.
