    Our opinion

An unprecedented offering of active and wellness facilities in Barbados.

    Hotel description

A four-star boutique hotel in Barbados, the Waves Hotel & Spa prides itself on being the ultimate retreat for mind and body. An Elegant Hotels property, it is the island’s very first all-inclusive mind-and-wellness focused boutique hotel. Throughout, the style channels the laid-back atmosphere of a Barbadian beach, with fresh, bright colours and light, airy spaces. The hotel is built around its two main pools: one of which is for families. Freeform in shape, the pools mould to the pattern of the palm trees dotted around them, and the cushioned sun loungers are perfect for relaxed sun-bathing. Cabanas around the family pool offer shade for young children, and Pool Ambassador service at both brings guests regular refreshments. The unassuming façade of the hotel enhances the feel of privacy and luxury beyond, where the eco-inspired modern guestrooms and suites bring the shades of blue from the sea views inside. Light wood headboards in some rooms and sandy-hued bed-throws add to the beach-feel, and a rustic piece of driftwood is mounted above many of the beds. A highlight of the design of the guestrooms is the polished wooden floors, which have a typically-mahogany tinge. The ‘Spa’ room types are situated in the separate adults-only spa building, making them a peaceful, more intimate option for couples. The spa itself offers a range of island-inspired treatments that capture Barbados’ reputation for luxury. Enjoy deep tissue treatments, as well as Swedish or hot stone massages, which incorporate award-winning Elemis products. Included in the price of your stay is full-use of the water and land sports facilities at the hotel, except jet-skiing, which comes at an added cost. Spend your days either water skiing, tackling the waves on a tube ride, catching a glimpse of tropical fish while snorkelling, kayaking along Barbados’ Platinum West Coast, taking a relaxed view of the beach on a paddleboard, or enjoying a Hobie Cat sailing lesson. Other active opportunities around the resort include personalised fitness regimes, circuit training, or more relaxing yoga and Pilates classes. Alternatively, those looking to get creative and craft their own souvenir might attend the seafront ‘cork and canvas’ events, where expressive painting is paired with fine wines. On top of this, cooking demonstrations, mixology classes, guided beach walks, and a local craft market are all available. After an action-packed day, choose one of the two restaurants for dinner, or make the most of the dine around programme and travel to a nearby Elegant Hotel. The Mediterranean-inspired Seascapes Restaurant serves food throughout the day in a three-walled dining room, and offers an al fresco terrace for enjoying the warmth in the day or the sunset in the evening. Shiso is another option for dinner, serving authentic Asian cuisine, including noodles, sushi, and sashimi. In the afternoon, take a break and enjoy a light snack in the new Kyma Coffee Bar. Guests at the Waves Hotel & Spa are spoilt for choice when it comes to activity, dining, and accommodation. So much choice, with the added benefits of all-inclusive, ensures that each stay is entirely unique, tailored exactly to the requirements of the guest.

    Out and aboutnearby/local interest

With such a huge range of activities at the hotel itself, it is entirely possible to spend a whole week just enjoying the water sports and classes at the Waves Hotel & Spa. Those interested in exploring the cultural and natural attractions that Barbados is home to might embark on a scenic island tour, which the hotel can help organise, that takes you past historic churches and old plantation manor houses, and into traditional rum shops. Alternatively, take an eco-hike to explore all the island’s beauty spots. Harrison’s Cave, at the very centre of the island, is an underground cavern riddled with limestone stalagmites and stalactites, pools, and babbling streams. It is accessed via tram. In the north of the island, you might visit the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, or, in the south, head to the island’s capital: Bridgetown. Known for its British colonial architecture, Bridgetown is home to a 17th century garrison, one of the island’s famous horseracing tracks, and the National Heroes Square. Off the coast, you will find 6 shipwreck dive sites.
