A touring holiday in France is perhaps the best way to witness and enjoy the diversity of this richly treasured country in one go. You may opt for self-drive, taking your own car on the ferry or Eurotunnel and driving through France, or you may prefer to fly into a French city and then explore with a hire-car. For those who wish to enjoy the stunning French scenery without having to drive long distances, travelling by train is incredibly convenient and allows you to arrive in comfort before collecting a hire-car.
We have created a selection of suggested self-drive, fly-drive and rail touring itineraries in France. However you choose to travel to France, you will then have the freedom to explore the country by car, travelling at your own pace whilst staying in luxurious and charming hotels. From the snowy mountain peaks and alpine pastures of the Alps, to the palm-fringed promenades and Mediterranean sun of the Côte d’Azur; from the rugged cliffs and sandy beaches of temperate Brittany, to the verdant cherry orchards in the foothills of the Pyrenees, France abounds in contrasts and variety. The architecture reflects this diversity of landscape, culture and history, from the numerous chateaux of the Loire Valley to the golden stone of the Dordogne and the terracotta roofs of Provence. On top of all this, there are a multitude of flavours and regional cuisines to experience throughout France, such as the rich creamy cuisine of Normandy and the tomato and garlic infused dishes of the southerly regions such as Provence. A touring holiday in France therefore allows you the flexibility to explore multiple regions, sample a number of fabulous tastes, and witness the most striking array of natural landscapes, so that you can leave with a broader feel of this diverse and beautiful country.Click here to download a pdf with information about some of our suggested French touring holidays.Clients testimonials:"We had a lovely touring holiday in France. Our hotels are renowned for their charm and character, whilst others provide rest and relaxation amid an atmosphere of luxury and style. Our Travel OptionsThe options we provide reflect the diversity of the range of holidays to France we are offering. Certain means of travel are more appropriate to certain destinations and the type of travel option you choose may depend upon where you’re travelling from in the UK. We can offer you holidays by air (with a hire-car in France), by train using Eurostar and then the fast TGV French connections, or by ferry/tunnel if you want to take your own car. With the most extensive rail network in Western Europe, France is a great country to explore by train. The nationally owned SNCF runs fast, efficient services between the main towns. However if you really want to get off the beaten track, by far the best option is your own car.Fly-drive touring holidaysA holiday by air and a subsequent hire-car is an excellent option that allows you to make the most of your holiday time, to concentrate on exploring regions further afield and to avoid driving all the way. This option offers all the benefits of travelling independently and gives you the opportunity to explore as you want. We have put together a number of suggested itineraries for fly-drive touring holidays which can be amended according to your wishes.Flight time from London is approximately one hour to Paris and 90 minutes to the main southern airports in Lyon and Bordeaux. France’s extensive network of airports is served by a variety of airlines from the UK, including British Airways, Air France, KLM. We work with Avis as they offer a variety of cars at a good range of offices throughout France, at airports and railway stations as well as in city centre locations. We have negotiated a number of benefits such as theft protection now being included automatically in all car rentals, and no one-way drop off charge within France for the majority of car types.Benefits of a fly-drive holiday with French Expressions include: • Choose your flight route and operator. We work with the scheduled services of British Airways to give you maximum choice, convenient flight times and quality of service. However, we are also happy to book a charter flight or one of the 'No frills' airlines who might have a departure from a local airport. • Collect your hire-car in one place and return it to another at no additional cost with the vast majority of car types. • Upgrade your hire car if required. We include a basic hire-car which is adequate for just two people, a short break or if you don’t intend to do much driving. However, you might want to up-grade to something larger and more powerful.• We provide directions from the airport to each hotel that you are visiting, as well as our own suggestions for sightseeing and local visits.Self-drive holidaysWe believe that the best way to experience the real essence of France is by driving along the highways and byways. Cross to France by ferry or Eurotunnel then journey across the country in your own car, ensuring a sense of space, freedom and independence. We will tailor-make your holiday to include travel to France by the most convenient means, and accommodation in as many hotels as you require. We have put together some suggested touring itineraries for self-drive holidays to France which can be modified according to your requirements, or you may wish to simply stay in one hotel for the duration of your holiday. As we work with all cross-Channel operators, you have the freedom to choose the route and time that is most appropriate to your journey. Eurotunnel Le Shuttle crosses from Folkestone to Calais in just 35 minutes, while the ferry from Dover to Calais takes around 90 minutes. Crossing durations vary greatly for other routes, with departures from Plymouth, Poole and Portsmouth to destinations along the northern coast of France. Alternatively, it may be more convenient for clients travelling from Scotland or the north of England to cross from Hull to Zeebrugge in Belgium. Holidays by railHolidays by rail are increasingly popular as The Channel Tunnel and the fast Eurostar train have opened up France and indeed the rest of Europe. Eurostar operate trains from London to Paris and from Paris to London with almost hourly departures every day. In addition to being able to travel from the centre of London to the centre of Paris on the same train in three hours, you can use the excellent French railway network to travel from London to cities including Bordeaux, Nice and Avignon in one day. French Expressions offers a range of rail options including travel by Eurostar to Paris for a city break, or travel by Eurostar to Paris or Lille Europe and beyond where you can connect to a fast TGV service. You can then either collect a hire-car and explore the area at leisure, or continue to your chosen hotel by private transfer then travel onwards to your next destination by train. We have put together a number of suggested itineraries for rail holidays to and within France, which can be amended according to your preferences.
