    Our opinion

The Residence Mauritius is an elegant resort with views of the brilliant turquoise sea from the cool white of the buildings.

    Hotel description

Occupying a glorious stretch of white sand beach on the east coast of the island, The Residence Mauritius is a striking five star hotel. The hotel has an atmosphere that is relaxed and calm, stylish and sophisticated, which is enhanced by the magnificent entrance hall with its soaring ceiling and white pillars. Huge Indian wall carvings add oriental flavour, complemented by numerous brightly coloured plants. From the cool white of the buildings you can see through to the brilliant turquoise of the sea beyond the gardens. The white sand beach is one kilometre long and flanked by a reef-protected sea, and is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding features of the hotel. At the far end of the beach is the Yacht Club, where guests can enjoy a wide range of complimentary water sports to make the most of the hotel’s excellent location, including windsurfing, waterskiing and kayaking. A very special feature of The Residence Mauritius is the Sanctuary, which is more than just a beauty centre, drawing inspiration from Zen philosophy to offer treatments for the body and soul. You are greeted by gentle, soothing aromas, exotic furnishings and spice-coloured drapes that induce a sense of rest and well-being, and services on offer here include yoga, meditation and massage. At lunchtimes you can wander the length of the beach or wind your way through the palms to the Plantation Restaurant, built in the style of a traditional Mauritian plantation house and serving superb seafood and Creole cuisine under the filao trees. Alternatively, head for the main building and enjoy the A la Carte lunch in the Verandah Restaurant, which overlooks the sea. This is also the place for a refreshing homemade ice-cream or sorbet at the end of the afternoon. Dinner can be enjoyed in the refined yet relaxed ambience of The Dining Room, where local produce is imaginatively used with distinct Indian, Chinese and Creole accents. The bedrooms are all very spacious and are decorated in an understated, contemporary way, with high-quality furniture, light colours and natural fabrics. Orchids and other flowers are present in every room and the large bathrooms are filled with exquisite toiletries. Elegantly understated, stylish and serene, this is an outstanding hotel on a marvellous beach.
