    Our opinion

The Palazzo Leopoldo is an inherently Tuscan hotel, offering warmth and charm that reflects one of our favourite Italian landscapes.

    Hotel description

A traditional hotel set in the midst of the Chianti region of Tuscany, the four-star Palazzo Leopoldo is a property steeped in a romantic atmosphere that encourages guests to become acquainted with the heritage of their location. At the centre of the small town of Radda, the Palazzo Leopoldo is well-placed for exploring the area and going out to dine in the evenings. The building itself dates back to the 14th century, though has been renovated through the years, particularly in the recent addition of a new wing. The Palazzo Leopoldo’s most opulent era was under the ownership of the Minucci family during the Renaissance. Today, the original frescoes, cotto tiles, and grand fireplaces hark back to this colourful history. Your days here begin with breakfast in the manor’s kitchen, where you eat beneath the exposed beams and brick archways, alongside antique furnishings and terracotta surface tops. An in-keeping style is found throughout the rest of the hotel, with further arches, solid dark wood doors, and mahogany tables. In the evenings, dine at La Perla del Palazzo Restaurant, perhaps on the beautiful terrace that overlooks the vineyards and hills of Chianti. Here, wrought iron balustrades add a touch of Mediterranean style, while the white-clothed tables hint at a fine-dining experience. The cuisine is built around a local, traditional menu, comprised of home-made dishes and seasonal ingredients. Try the home-made pasta, the delicate vegetables, steak, and Italian desserts, alongside Chianti, Tuscan, and Italian wines. On the lowest level of the hotel is the Wellness Centre, which is housed in rooms with curved stone ceilings and without windows, which seem to invoke something of the property’s ancient history, while creating a relaxing environment for enjoying the pool and massage treatments. An outdoor pool is available for hotel guests to use at L’Ultimo Mulino Hotel, just five minutes away. Many guests visit Chianti for its wines, enjoying tasting sessions in towns and villages such as Radda; at the Palazzo Leopoldo, however, you can also take part in cookery lessons, where you make traditional Tuscan dishes in the atmospheric kitchen. The classes are run by two sisters, Anita and Valentina, who grew up in the area. At the end of the lesson, guests can enjoy their creations for dinner. Retire to your guestroom afterwards, to relax and take in the classical style and warm, homely feel. The Palazzo Leopoldo is a fantastic hotel for those looking to get in touch with rural Tuscany and to delve deeper into the wines and cuisine of the area.

The Chianti region is best-known for its wine, which can be tasted in a number of cellars and wineries in almost every village and town in the area. Perhaps stop off at Gaiole for a tasting session in the Castello di Brolio. You might also visit San Gimignano to see its many spires, Volterra to see its Etruscan architecture and Roman remains, or Monteriggioni to see its original Mediaeval walls. Further north, the city of Florence has a reputation for artistic grandeur that precedes it, and its former rival Siena offers a more subtle insight into Tuscan art and architecture. Perhaps also spend a day down by the Tuscan coast, which often gets overlooked in favour of the hilltop wine towns.
