Experience authentic Burma with our tailor-made holidays and tours

In line with guidelines for ethical tourism laid down by Aung San Suu Kyi, Expressions Travel is launching a programme of tailor-made itineraries for individuals to visit Burma. Experience a wonderful new country opening up at the same time as supporting educational projects in this developing economy through the Burma Children’s Fund.

Burma has escaped the growth in tourism experienced by its neighbours in recent years due to its political isolation. But now the landslide victory on April 1st by Aung San Suu Kyi and her party, the National League for Democracy, is expected to bring sweeping changes. Economic sanctions which have crippled the country for decades are set to be eased and the country is opening up to tourism. Burma is now keen to attract individual travellers.

A devoutly Buddhist country which has remained in a time warp for decades , a trip to Burma is like turning back the clock fifty years. Its great natural beauty, cultural splendours and above all its gentle people will captivate you. You will discover places where few foreigners have trodden, as well as a country rich in tribal customs and traditions. Privately run airlines coupled with excellent boutique style hotels now make travelling in this wonderful country easy and safe. Whether it is the colonial character of Rangoon or the soaring pagodas on the banks of the Irrawaddy River, the cultural traditions of Mandalay, the leg rowers of Inle or the miles of unspeakably beautiful beaches, a trip to Burma is a life-changing experience. As Rudyard Kipling wrote a century ago, it is a country ‘quite unlike any land one knows about …’

Our programme of holidays and travel experiences to Burma offers the opportunity to experience this varied country, whether it be the well-preserved colonial architecture of Rangoon, the former royal capital Mandalay or a magical balloon ride over Bagan, the site of more than 3,000 pagodas and temples. These wonders, combined with genuine old style Asia culture, make for a destination very few places can rival.

    Burma with Expressions Holidays

Expressions Holidays has been organising tailor-made holidays and luxury travel experiences to selected destinations around the world for over 20 years. Our suggested itineraries are designed to whet the appetite of first-time visitors or appeal to those wishing to return. They are a guide to what we can offer. We advise not trying to see too much on a single journey to Burma so that you have the time to enjoy and savour the atmosphere of the country. Add a beach extension to our shorter trips to provide a few days relaxing on the white sands of the Bay of Bengal at Ngapali in high season or in Thailand in the low season. Or relax on a river journey on the Irrawaddy River. For those wishing to recapture the flavour of the British Empire, our Colonial Burma itinerary will transport you back in time. Wherever your journey takes you to in Burma, the lack of tourist development coupled with the friendliness of its people will overwhelm you.

    Facts

Capital - Rangoon or locally now called Yangon (for commercial purposes)
    Population - 50 million
Airport - International flights to the new Yangon International Airport arrive from many overseas cities including Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Beijing, Bangkok, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and Guangzhou. Rangoon is easily reached by a one hour flight from Bangkok.
Domestic Airlines - There are now a total of 5 private domestic carriers in Burma. All use ATR aircraft making flying the quickest and most comfortable mode of domestic travel. There is a 20kg luggage limitation.
Currency - ‘Kyat’ (pronounced ‘chaat’). Official rate now around 8 kyat/US$. Major hotels and some larger restaurants charge in US$ but most other expenses will be in kyat. The most convenient place to get kyat is at the airport on arrival where two of the local banks now have counters. Although the banks will take the Euro the easiest currency to use is the US$.
    Size - 676,000 sq km
Average temperatures - There are three ‘seasons’. Hot season – March to mid May when temperatures average 25c – 38c, Rainy season – mid May to September with temperatures of 23c – 33c and the Winter season – October to February with average temperatures 18c – 24c. The winter season is the main tourist season. Rains are low up-country with the tourist season now running virtually all year long. In fact many prefer the rainy season for its lack of crowds and cooler weather, although some cruises do not operate during this season and Ngapali hotels are closed. Due to the huge rise in tourism experienced this year we would recommend clients consider visiting during the low season when availability for hotel rooms will be much easier than in peak seasons. Beach extensions in Thailand work well in the low season. Our Spirit of Burma Tour works well all year round and is an ideal introduction to the highlights of Burma.

    Map of Burma

    Local highlights

The smiling open faces and kindness of the Burmese people. A walk at sunset around the Kandawgyi Lake in Rangoon; the views over the city from the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda; ambling around the lesser visited upper levels of Scott’s market where the real local colour is to be found. Taking in the sights on a walk up Mandalay Hill or exploring the city’s arts and crafts workshops; Savouring the stupas and temples of Sagaing in the early morning light before boarding the old colonial steamer RV Paukan to journey along the Irrawaddy River from Mandalay to Bagan. A balloon ride over Bagan at dawn or cycling around the lesser known temples of Bagan; the lesser know southern Mon and Kayin states Burma where few tourists venture – the little visited temples and caves, old colonial buildings and the terminus of the infamous Burma Siam Railway (Death Railway); mystically beautiful Inle Lake; hiking from Kalaw; the Bay of Bengal with its white sandy beach and clear blue sea where you can walk straight out of your room onto the beach and unwind. Your mobile will not work here!
