    Our opinion

This magnificent chalet-style hotel is located in an area of incredible natural beauty, with a fantastic sense of both traditional and contemporary luxury. We would highly recommend visiting the Grossarler Hof as part of a tour around Austria and Switzerland.

    Hotel description

The four star superior Grossarler Hof in Grossarl is a chalet-style hotel that offers a contemporary twist on Alpine tradition. The interior and exterior architecture is shaped by expertly crafted native wood, with rustic dark wood in the public areas, and very light wood in the bedrooms. Combined with other natural materials, such as slate and stone, the wood gives this four-year-old property all the charm and character is would have had if it were centuries old. The vast white and brown façade punctuates without disrupting the natural landscape, with chairs and tables spilling out onto the patio, miniscule against the sheer size of the surrounding mountains, and golden lights along the balconies that encase the hotel in a breath-taking glow at night. The main restaurant serves breakfast in the morning, Austrian Jause (large snacks) in the afternoon, and a four-course dinner in the evenings. The Jagastub’n Restaurant serves gourmet food in a historic atmosphere, with wooden chairs, linen table cloths, and a tiled stove. Reservations are recommended. Before dinner, however, pay a visit to the Erlenreich Relax and Spa, which offers a range of facilities, from massages and facials, to the Sanarium and gym. Or, simply relax on an outdoor lounger to enjoy the scenery. The rooms and suites at the Grossarler Hof continue the authenticity of the rest of the hotel, with elaborate and detailed carpentry and original linen prints. The chic, elegant, spacious accommodation places comfort and luxury at the forefront. Stay at the Grossarler Hof if you wish to explore and admire the beauty of the Grossarl Valley, the Alpine meadows, and the Grossarler Ache River. Spend a few nights here as part of a longer rail or fly-drive touring holiday, or stay for a week to become better acquainted with Austrian rural life.

    Out and aboutnearby/local interest

The Grossarler Hof itself hosts a number of annual events, including the Hunters’ Ball, the Days of Viniculture and Skiing, and the Mooslehen Challenge. During autumn, the Grossarl Valley comes alive with the Autumn Festival, which features concerts, markets, and regional, folkloristic traditions. The area around the Grossarler Hof is covered in pretty Alpine meadows that surround the jagged mountains, separated by running streams, affording the valley the affectionate name of ‘Valley of Alpine Meadows.’ If you have a hire car, it is worth visiting some of the local villages, tucked away into the crevices between the mountains. One such village is Hüttschlag, around 8km from Grossarl, which is one of Austria’s ‘mountaineering villages’ and the ideal day-trip for active visitors. Beautiful Alpine walks are accessible at the foot of the Hohe Tauern mountain range, from where you wander up past mountain pastures and into the Hohe Tauern National Park. Nordic walking excursions may offer a more cultural twist to these walks, or alternatively go climbing, cycling, or even rafting. Such a sublime natural area is a haven for wildlife and birdlife, which can be appreciated on one of these active excursions, or simply from the hotel. Purchase the Salzburger Land Card for access to 190 attractions, including lakes, cable cars, castles, and museums, to enable a self-guided tour of the area’s cultural exhibits. Some local attractions include Hohenwerfen Castle, the phenomenal giant Ice Caves, the thunderous Krimml Waterfalls, the Liechtensteinklamm gorge (one of the longest in the Alps), the Kaprun High-Mountain Reservoirs, and the magnificent Salzburg City. Even without this card, you can enjoy the palatial look of some of the town buildings in Salzburg, the immaculately preserved gardens, and the small churches and huts that line the countryside back at Grossarl.

    Sports nearby

There are 8 Alpine Golf courses within one hour’s drive of the Grossarler Hof. Walking, hiking, cycling and mountain biking, climbing, skiing, rafting, and mountaineering opportunities are also available.
