  • Tailor-made luxury holidays to Malta

    Europe Malta
From its North African and Arabic influences to the Sicilian-inspired cuisine, Malta is a microcosm of the Mediterranean, with a concentration of historical and architectural riches to match. Less than 40 miles off Sicily’s southern tip, and a British colony until 1964, Malta nevertheless has a quirky character all of its own. Roughly the same latitude as Tangiers, it also has a wonderful climate, particularly in spring and autumn, when its clifftops and valleys are covered in herbs and flowers. Comprising three islands – Malta, Gozo and Comino – the islands formed strategic outposts of Phoenicians and Carthaginians, Romans and finally Britain, and here and there – in stone temples and a unique hypogeum – they resonate today with echoes of their ancient rulers. Of the three islands, Malta is the largest, then Gozo, with Comino inhabited only by a handful of farmers. With beautiful beaches – the northern beaches on Malta are among the finest on the Med – superb seafood cafes, and beautiful Old Towns, Malta is so small you could see it all in a few days, but so enchanting you could never tire of it in a lifetime.

Malta International Airport, 5 miles south of Valletta
    Euro (£1=1.24 Euros)
316 sq km (twice the size of Liechtenstein)
    Average temperature
a very pleasant annual average of 18°C, varying from 12°C in January to 30°C in July and August. Yearly rainfall is low, at around 600mm and most of this falls during thunderstorms in late autumn and winter. The summer in Malta is long and very hot with almost no rainfall. June to September sees average daytime highs of around 30°C. These high temperatures are often relieved by cooling sea breezes; however the island can see temperatures soaring up to the 40s when the sirocco wind blows from Africa. Summer nights are very warm too, with temperatures in July and August rarely falling below the mid-20s.

    Local highlights

Valletta, Malta’s bite-sized capital, packed with outdoor cafes and seafood restaurants, as well as historical and architectural gems; promenading and dining out on the seafront at St Julian’s & Paceville, just outside Sliema; the twisting alleys of Vittoriosa, hiding lots of atmospheric wine bars; the mysterious underground necropolis of Hypgeum; seafood restaurants overlooking the pretty harbour at Marsaxlokk; the megalithic remains and stunning setting of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples; the tiny, fortified Mdina, Malta’s most beautiful city; the northern beaches Mellieha, Golden and Paradise Bay; the baroque splendour of Mellieha’s 19th century hilltop church, focus of an annual Festa in September; the Blue Lagoon – crowded but fantastic swimming and snorkelling; Victoria, packed with historical and gastronomic treats, and gateway to the much quieter pleasures of Gozo.

    Getting out and about

There is a very inexpensive bus network in Malta, and regular car-ferries between Cirkewwa (northern Malta) and Mgarr (Gozo), and between Valletta and Sliema. However, car-hire is the best option if you really want to explore the island.

    Travel arrangements

Air Malta flies from Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, London City, Luton, Manchester, Bristol, Exeter, Birmingham, Liverpool, Nottingham, Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh; flight time is around 4 hours.
