    Our opinion

The Grand Hotel du Lac is a highly luxurious hotel offering stunning accommodation and classically excellent service.

    Hotel description

The Grand Hotel du Lac in Vevey is a five star Relais and Chateaux property overlooking the north-western shore of Lake Geneva. The elegance of its south-facing façade is matched by the stunning vistas of this location. Renovated in 2006 by Pierre-Yves Rochon to recreate the flair of 1868 architect M. Ernest Burnat, the palatial building is ornamented with wrought iron balconies that sit below tall windows framed by light grey shutters. The glassy lobby entrance is shaped by the hotel wings on either side. Vines and creeping plants climb the lattice that borders the gardens, creating an idyllic sense of privacy. Shaded behind these living walls is the heated outdoor swimming pool. Sun loungers sit beneath parasols, looking out across the reflection of the palace in the water. Preened hedges mark pathways from the patio across the grass, and add to the expertly manicured, regal feel to the grounds. Inside, each of the public rooms are linked by a graceful main walkway. Monochrome marble tiles, vast oriental vases, hanging lanterns, and beautiful flower arrangements guide you from the lobby to the restaurants, the Lounge, the Oriental Lounge, and the Hotel Bar. As the name suggests, the Oriental Lounge is adorned with touches of the exotic; the upholstery is interwoven with golden threads, grand ornate stools and cabinets support gold teapots and figurines, and delicate lace veils the keyhole arch window. In the other of the hotel’s lounges, a Venetian-esque style prevails. Rich purples in the tall flowers, armchairs, rug, and dividing screen create a soothing, opulent atmosphere; yet, glass-topped tables and an alternative lamp-shaded chandelier suggest a modern edge. Both lounge styles are combined in the Hotel Bar, where Chinese tapestries and curtains are paired with modern artworks and an elegant marble fireplace. In the guestrooms, the decoration takes on a more neutral tone, with soft greys, greens, blues, yellows, and creams. Floral bed throws are accented by feature walls and panelling, and are painstakingly matched to the soft furnishings. Some higher category rooms have their own individual fireplaces, and the Suite Leman introduces a bold, unapologetic red to the bed covers, furnishings, chandelier, and curtains, and the fireplace is framed by a rich dark brown stone. Once again, modern artworks add a flash of cutting-edge modernity. Before retiring to your room, you can choose from a range of dining options. In La Veranda, guests can dine either in the elegant glass-walled dining room or on the outside terrace looking across the town of Vevey. The Michelin-starred Les Saisons picks up the purple colour scheme once more, which is then set against a grand hearth and intricately painted wall murals. The menu served here is governed by the best seasonal produce and therefore reflects the changing seasons of Switzerland through its flavours. Every room at the Grand Hotel du Lac has been thoughtfully designed down to the minutest detail, ensuring that your stay here is characterised by grandeur and the highest luxury.

    Out and aboutnearby/local interest

With so many famous places on your doorstep, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to cultural exploration. We would recommend paying a visit to Montreux, Lausanne, and Geneva respectively. The highlights of Montreux include Chillon Castle, perched on a rocky outcrop, the most photographed landmark in Switzerland, the railway to Rochers-de-Naye, the Chocolate Train journey, and the Vineyard Train which takes you through the Lavaux Terraced vineyards. These 800 hectares of vineyards are the largest living cultural site in Switzerland. Of course, you may wish to time your visit to coincide with the Montreux Jazz Festival. In Lausanne, perhaps begin with the promenade at Ouchy, which links together the picturesque Olympic Park outside the new Olympic Museum, the Haldimand Tower, the Bellevrie Swimming Pool, the Chateau d’Ouchy, and the portside. In Geneva, begin with the most striking monument, the Jet d’Eau fountain that bursts out of the water in the harbour. Then, wander around the Old Town, visiting the St Pierre Cathedral and several of the small, unique shops, before stopping at the Palais des Nations or one of the contemporary art museums. Geneva is also home to four world-exclusive museums: the International Museum of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, Le Musee International de la Reforme, the Patek Philippe Museum, and the Bodmer Foundation Library and Museum.

    Sports nearby

Water sports and boat rides on Lake Geneva; walking, hiking, cycling, and golf in the mountains.

Family rooms are available, comprised of interconnecting suites and rooms. Babysitting services and cots are available on request. Children younger than 6 receive a complimentary breakfast.
