Our opinion
The Royal Plaza Montreux & Spa adds a touch of traditional luxury to any holiday in Switzerland.
Hotel description
The five star Royal Plaza Montreux & Spa is separated from the waters of Lake Geneva by a long tree-lined promenade. The white-washed brown-roofed houses of Montreux scale the hillside behind the hotel’s privileged position, emerging out of dense clusters of trees. Yachts and small boats float off the rocky shore on calm, tranquil waters. In the distance, from the restaurant terrace or the lake-facing guestroom windows, it is possible to see the snow-capped Alps on the other side of Lake Geneva. The guestrooms have a traditional feel that complements the more modern aspects of the hotel’s exterior. Patterned curtains in some rooms match the bold, rich colours of the cushions, bed throws, and headboards; flowers in vases decorate the night stands; and crisp, white linens cover soft mattresses. Large windows allow you to take in the views of the lake, the city of Montreux, or the mountains as you relax throughout the day; we would recommend reserving a lake view room with a balcony to make the most of your sublime location. The higher room categories use a more neutral colour scheme, with plush sofas and subtle oriental touches. During the day, we would recommend reaping the benefits of your lakeside position, taking part in water sports, lake cruises, and venturing further out to explore the Lavaux vineyards and the mountain valleys. In the evenings, dine at Café Bellagio, perhaps outside on the terrace, on cuisine inspired by fusion and French cuisine, crafted by the Royal Plaza Montreux & Spa’s innovative chef. Enjoy the sight of the lake in the setting sunlight with a cocktail or digestif in hand at Sinatra’s Bar or the Sunset Bar. All guests at the Royal Plaza Montreux & Spa are granted unlimited access to the MONSPA, though treatments come at an extra charge, and the Health Centre Clinique Lemana. At the Spa, guests are free to enjoy a variety of massages and treatments, such as volcanic hot stone massages and regenerating facial care, before taking a dip in the swimming pool, reclining on the terrace, or relaxing in the Jacuzzi or sauna. Combine the Royal Plaza Montreux & Spa with other luxury four and five star hotels in Switzerland for an unforgettable Swiss rail touring holiday which includes the iconic chocolate box villages, more of Switzerland’s beautiful lakes, and the cultural waterside cities.

Out and aboutnearby/local interest
Though famous for the Montreux Jazz Festival, the city has much more to offer. A railway takes visitors across Alpine meadows to Rochers-de-Naye at over 2000m above sea level, from which you can sometimes see the Jet d’Eau fountain in Geneva across the lake. The Chateau de Chillon is perched on a rocky outcrop, unmissable for its fairytale beauty, and recognised to be Switzerland’s most popular historical landmark. For a taste of the Swiss chocolate tradition, take the Belle Epoque style Swiss Chocolate Train to the Maison Cailler to explore the history of Swiss chocolate production and craft some of your own. The Chocolate Train also takes you to medieval castle-topped Gruyeres, where three museums, characterful cobbled streets with townhouses that have shuttered windows, and pavement cafes await. Be sure to also visit the Lavaux Terraced Vineyards that stretch across 800 hectares of lakeside land, perhaps by Vineyard Train (S31), which takes you from Vevey to Puixdoux-Chexbres. For an exclusively relaxing day out, take one of the lake cruises across Lake Geneva, admiring the Alpine backdrop and stopping off in a number of small port villages. Those with children might wish to travel slightly further out to the waterparks and the Swiss Vapeur Park.
