    Our opinion

This is a truly luxurious five star hotel that offers abundant, impeccable facilities.

    Hotel description

On the lakefront in Lucerne, the five star Palace Luzern is flanked by the smaller palatial buildings that cover the hillside. Arriving guests must walk along the tree-lined promenade to the front entrance, first taking in the beauty of their location before entering the surprisingly chic and modern interior. Classical elements are continued along the corridors to the guestrooms, which follow either a traditionally elegant style, art deco design, or sleek modern style. The traditional rooms are based around a light, airy, neutral colour palette, with swooping gold curtains covering the balcony doors in the lake-view rooms, subtle artwork above the beds, and white panelling on the walls. The effect is to grace the rooms with a touch of regal grandeur, but without sacrificing the relaxing, home-from-home feel. Suites take more of an artistic approach, with prints of famous works by renowned European artists, such as Miro, Kandinsky, and Chagall, on the walls and sometimes a more daring colour scheme in the lounge areas. The suites typically have views across the lake, the mountains, and the stunning City of Lights. The Palace Luzern is home to the only seafood restaurant in Lucerne. Here, locally and nationally sourced fish is cooked entirely to your liking; whole fish are filleted at the table, and side dishes and sauces are chosen by each individual. One of the key ingredients in the seafood’s particularly delicious flavour is the specially selected olive oils. Guests can choose to dine in the minimalist dining room, accompanied by unique driftwood sculptures of fish, or on the Palace Terrace, overlooking the lake from which many of the fish were sourced. The Palace Bar and Living Room is a classical meeting place built on the original marble floor from 1906. Comfortable armchairs, tables dressed with quaint glass vases of flowers, a captivating glass chandelier, and a verdant outside terrace make this an idyllic and relaxing place to enjoy a few drinks, including fine local wines. Complete your luxurious visit to the Palace Luzern with a few hours in the Palace Spa. Here, guests can rejuvenate both body and mind in one of the light and tranquil treatment rooms, in the sauna, the steam bath, the spa suite, the fitness room, the quiet room, or the so-called ‘Giant Singing Bowl,’ which immerses guests in a multitude of oscillating sounds and has taken 15 years to perfect. Your totally relaxing stay at the Palace Luzern might only be a few nights, or it may be as long as a week depending on your itinerary; Lucerne, the area around Lucerne, and the impeccable facilities at the hotel ensure that every day here is enjoyable and fulfilling.

    Out and aboutnearby/local interest

The city of Lucerne originated as a mediaeval town; as a result, some of its more traditional buildings remain, particularly around the Museggmauer, or old town wall. This city wall still has its 9 towers, each of which is surrounded by streets lined with chalet-style houses, with stone walls and narrow balconies. Lucerne’s most famous, and quirkiest, landmark might be the Chapel Bridge, which stretches diagonally across the Reuss. This covered wooden bridge has a stone water tower and is lined with artwork. The roof of the tower is decorated with artwork from the 17th century. The Court Church of St. Loedegar also dates back to the 17th century, and has a vaulted, white-stone interior, and twinned Gothic bell-towers near the waterfront. The image of a dying lion was carved into the rock face above a pond in the east part of the city to commemorate the Swiss guards killed in the French Revolution. If you’d like to see more of the Swiss natural landscape, we would recommend heading out onto the Rigi Massif, hemmed in between Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug, and Lake Lauerz. The slopes of this area are laden with almond and chestnut trees, and it is also home to Mount Pilatus, which has the steepest cog railway in the world. The popular sports in the area are determined by the lake and the mountains. Lake Lucerne is the fourth largest lake in Switzerland, and has the most diverse shoreline. The southern point, in particular, is much like a fjord, and is the site of the Rütli Meadow, where the country was reputedly born. Tours up into the Swiss Alps, through gorges and across glaciers, are also available with local companies.
