  • Tailor made touring holidays to Blenheim and Marlborough

    Blenheim and Marlborough image N
This region also benefits from a sunny, warm and dry climate and is renowned for the startlingly beautiful scenery of the Marlborough Sounds, a landscape of water and islands, inlets and lush vegetation created by river valleys being drowned by the sea, accessible by boat, kayak and on foot and the extensive vineyards near Blenheim in the Wairau Valley, backed by the arid-looking Richmond mountains. Olive trees nestle on the hillsides above the vines. This is New Zealand’s largest wine producing area with about 50 wineries in operation and is particularly known for its Sauvignon Blanc although other varieties including Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon are also produced here. The area is also home to numerous artists and craftspeople and the Millenium Art Gallery in Blenheim houses works by local painters and sculptors.

    The climate

Australia’s size results in a variable climate. The expansive interior is hot throughout the year but can often be very cold at night. The southern third of the country enjoys warm summers (December – March) and mild winters (June – August), although there are extremes of this, such as in the alpine country of New South Wales and Victoria where winters are a lot colder. The far north of the country has just two seasons because of its position on the monsoon belt – hot and wet, and hot and dry.

    Climate
New Zealand enjoys a maritime climate, which explains partly the lush vegetation and the rich pastures, but also makes it very changeable. It is subject to prevailing winds from west to east although most rain falls in winter (June to August) and the summer months (December to March) are generally drier. The southern and western parts of the country are wetter than the northern and the eastern parts. On top of this longitude and altitude plays a role, with the northern part of the North Island enjoying an almost ‘winter-free’ year and being subtropical.
