  • About this holiday

The Aliya Resort and Spa in Sigiriya is named after ‘Aliya,’ the Sri Lankan elephant. Much of its charm and character comes from its dedication to this theme, from the small figurines that adorn the bar, to the vast and captivating elephant paintings that enliven the white-washed walls, to the wide square swimming pool that appears as a mirage or watering hole in the midst of the rocky plains of the Cultural Triangle. The Aliya Resort and Spa is an attractive luxury addition to any Sri Lankan touring holiday as it offers an insight into a region that is dominated by stunning history and culture.

    Our opinion

The panoramic views across the jagged, dramatic rocks and sandy red plains, combined with the contemporary chic of the hotel interiors, make the Aliya Resort and Spa a thoroughly desirable addition to any tour of Sri Lanka.

    Hotel description

Deep in Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, the Aliya Resort and Spa is inspired and named after the Sri Lankan elephant, images of which are scattered throughout the hotel. The rocks of Sigiriya, including Lion Rock and the famous Rock Fortress, disturb the flat horizon, and can be fully appreciated from the first floor open-walled viewing deck, or the poolside for a greater sense of their scale on the flatlands. Set out in the style of a Sri Lankan village, the complex is comprised of chalets and luxury tented rooms. The tents are sheltered by large canopies and supported by raised decking, and large, comfortable beds and modern amenities make these a refined and elegant alternative to camping in the forest. Inside the chalets, the rooms are effortlessly sleek, with light neutral colours and rich splashes of colour in the form of armchairs, rugs, or artwork. Guests can dine in any of the four restaurants and bars. Alaka serves regional dishes in a fresh, monochromatic setting, complete with panoramic veranda. Nagula offers the chance to dine on the veranda of the Paddy Museum, sheltered by the rustic thatched roof. Makara specialises in Chinese cuisine, and serves it in the romantic ambience established by the golden dragons on the walls and the red fringed ceiling. Migara is a relaxed coffee shop and bar with a bright and airy feel and small, quirky antique figurines of lions and elephants decorating the walls. During the day, spend your time exploring the surrounding landscape and visiting nearby towns, or remain at the Aliya Resort and Spa to enjoy the vast swimming pool, styled as an infinity pool. To complete your experience of the Aliya Resort and Spa, try a treatment at the Ayur Vie Spa, or organise an excursion through the hotel. Stay at the Aliya Resort and Spa on your tour of Sri Lanka to ensure you are able to explore this fascinating and secluded region.

    Out and aboutnearby/local interest

The Aliya Resort and Spa organises excursions to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, to the Minneriya National Park, to the Polonnaruwa Archaeological Ruins, and to the Kaudulla National Park. The city of Anuradhapura was, like Polonnaruwa, once part of the Golden Age of Sinhalese civilisation, and many of its monuments still stand, including monasteries, palaces, dagobas, and the sacred fig tree that was mythically brought from India in the 3rd century. Dambulla is home to a series of cave temples that are worth visiting due to their abundance of Buddhist sculpture and painting. Mihintale was the site at which Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka. The atmospheric and chilling Ritigala forest monastery can also be visited.
