    Our opinion

Amangalla in Galle Fort offers the perfect combination of a splendid colonial hotel and the ultimate in luxury, surrounded by heritage and local life.

    Hotel description

Dating back over 400 years, the luxurious Amangalla hotel sits within the rampart walls of historic Galle Fort on Sri Lanka’s south-west tip, an ideal location for exploring Galle and the scenic and cultural attractions of the region. This glorious colonial building became The New Oriental Hotel in 1863 and has remained at the hub of life in Galle ever since. Having been beautifully restored, the hotel re-opened in 2004 as Amangalla, offering 29 bedrooms and the fine dining, exquisite service and immaculate touches that we have come to expect from an Aman resort hotel. At the entrance of Amangalla lies a long white veranda, a favoured place for watching the world go by over lunch or afternoon tea. This leads through to the Zaal, a great hall richly adorned with high ceilings, a grand piano and magnificent chandeliers. Splendid international, Sri Lankan and fusion cuisine is served in the adjacent Dining Room, replete with crisp white linen and antique silverware. The accommodation at Amangalla offers varied room arrangements and different views, due to the age and nature of the building. All of the 29 rooms are exquisitely appointed with four-poster beds, polished teak or jack wood floors, planters chairs and pettagama chests. Some rooms have a balcony or French windows opening onto the garden, whilst the Suites have their own separate living room. The most luxurious accommodation is the two-storey Garden House, which is furnished with the hotel’s original antique furniture, has its own private terrace and balcony and is serviced by a 24-hour private butler. Amangalla’s guests can relax in the pretty, peaceful gardens and at the swimming pool, sleeping in the shaded ‘ambalama’ or lounging in the sun. ‘The Baths’ Spa provides a perfect place to unwind and be pampered in between your forays around Galle, offering a hydrotherapy and water massage pool, sauna, steam and cold plunge pools as well as spa and Ayurveda therapy treatments. Yoga classes are also held at the tranquil pavilion in the garden. Amangalla is perfectly situated for walking straight out into the narrow streets of the historic Fort and wandering around the arts and crafts shops, churches, markets and temples dotted about. Those interested in the culture of Sri Lanka will also be fascinated by the book collection in the hotel’s air-conditioned library.
