Self-drive touring holiday exploring Brittany's coast

    6 nights and 7 days
This touring holiday is fantastic for getting to know the delights that Brittany has to offer, with only 3 hours and 30 minutes between the two hotels. Spend three nights in each hotel to grant you sufficient time to relax and visit the local attractions. Explore Brittany's northern, western and southern shorelines, and witness some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the whole of France, arguably the finest in Europe. The region's scenery is an eclectic mix of rocky coves, white sandy beaches, picturesque fishing villages and charming little resorts.

Your tour starts with the Eurotunnel from Folkestone to Calais, before you drive to the northern Bretonne Corniche at Trébeurden. Here you will find the lovely Hôtel Ti Al Lannec, set atop a wooded cliff overlooking the sea. Visit Brittany in spring to see the sublime setting of the hotel in full bloom, and explore the rocky hills to the song of a multitude of species of bird. The summer’s hazy skies and cool breeze, disturbing the green foliage of the hills, has attracted a wealth of artists over the years. But the mild winters provide a welcome alternative to the English weather. After spending three nights at Ti Al Lannec, drive to the second hotel, located in the south of Brittany in La Plaine-sur-Mer, which offers a proximity to the harbour that allows a constant view of the Breton way of life. Whilst staying at Hôtel Anne de Bretagne, indulge your taste buds in the hotel restaurant, awarded two Michelin stars, or perhaps explore the Port de La Gravette and even more of the Breton coastline. This tour’s itinerary enables visitors to the region to make the most of every minute and really experience the best of what Brittany has to offer.

PRICES for this self-drive holiday from £1050 per person

•Three nights’ dinner, bed and breakfast at Hôtel Ti Al Lannec in Trébeurden, in a room with sea view

    Day-by-Day Itinerary

Arrive in Calais and drive to Trébeurden

Arrive in Calais through the Eurotunnel from Folkestone. Drive along the coast to Trébeurden in Brittany and check in to the Hôtel Ti Al Lannec. Use this first night to dine at the hotel and try their range of shellfish, fish, cheese, and spectacular deserts, so typical of Breton cuisine.

Explore Trébeurden before driving on to La Plaine-sur-Mer

After breakfast each morning at the Hôtel Ti Al Lannec, begin your exploration of the landscape around Trébeurden, which is a diverse as it is beautiful. The rugged coastline lends itself perfectly to invigorating walks over headlands and cliffs, long beaches, and lush countryside, propelled along by the salty sea breeze that Brittany is so well known for. This fascinating coastline boasts the pink granite rocks of Ploumanac’h, the natural harbours of Trégastel, the Crozon Peninsula, as well as a number of off-shore islands just waiting to be explored. Your stay in Trébeurden is the perfect opportunity to become acquainted with these magnificent sights. Or perhaps take a boat trip from Perros-Guirec to the Sept Iles sea bird sanctuary. Visit Quimper nearby for a taste of Breton art and history, visit the theatre or the circus, or delve deeper into the range of live arts available. As the main commercial centre of Cornouaille, Quimper offers a direct contrast to the untouched nature of the countryside. Experience the charm of the village Pont-Aven, as Gauguin did in 1886, with its mills, port, and winding river. Just a two hour drive away, sits the seaside town of Saint-Malo, recently featured in the Pulitzer Prize winning novel All the Light we Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. Saint-Malo is an ancient walled city built on an island in the mouth of the Rance estuary. The Emerald Coast, which surrounds Saint-Malo is also the ideal spot for a stroll on some of France’s prettiest white sandy beaches. An historic port and excellent destination for those seeking good restaurants, bars, shops, and the charm of an old cobblestoned French town, if you have time Saint-Malo is well worth a visit.

Arrive in La Plaine-sur-Mer and explore southern Brittany

This sea view room in the Hôtel Anne de Bretagne is in a prime position to appreciate the Breton sea and the beautiful beach, Plage de la Gravette. During the day, to get a better feel for the sometimes choppy waves and the salty sea spray, local businesses offer sailing, yachting, and fishing excursions from the nearby ports. The Club Nautique de Pornic, just a short distance south, offers such yachting and sailing excursions, with options to partake in windsailing and other sports. While in Pornic, it is worth taking the time to visit the Plage de la Noëveillard marina for its historical relics that line the shore, as much as the views of the boats in harbour. Hire a cabin in the Loire Estuary and try cabin fishing, a peaceful sheltered alternative to the beach fishing also available in Port Giraud. For those more interested in the gastronomy of the area, why not explore one of the many fish markets of Brittany, or watch from La Gravette as the fishing boats come in to shore with the day’s catch. Later sample these delicacies - oysters, shellfish, shrimp, and mussels - in a local seafood restaurant. The 9km sandy beach at La Baule is the perfect place to relax after a day’s walk around the towns. Only a short drive away are attractions such as the salt marshes further south, the Gois Passage that links mainland France to the Îles de Noirmoutier, and for those interested in witnessing the history of one of the most original parts of France, the medieval town of Guerande.

Drive back to Calais and travel home via the Eurotunnel

Leave the Anne de Bretagne after breakfast and begin the coastal drive back to Calais, before taking the Eurotunnel back to Folkestone and driving home.

Driving times for this touring holiday in Brittany:
Calais to Trébeurden: 6 hours 15 minutes
Trébeurden to La Plaine-sur-Mer: 3 hours 30 minutes
La Plaine-sur-Mer to Calais: 6 hours 15 minutes

    Hotel Information

These are the outstanding hotels featured on this tour of Brittany. Alternative hotels are available in some destinations - please contact us for full details.

    Hôtel Ti Al Lannec

A hotel in the style of a French country house, this extremely comfortable, well-run hotel exudes a home-from-home feel. The Ti Al Lannec enjoys a remarkable position on the cliff top overlooking the Pointe de Bihit and the bay at Trébeurden, on the striking rugged coast of northern Brittany. A superior 4 star hotel, Ti Al Lannec is owned and run by M and Mme Jouanny and belongs to the Relais du Silence association. The property has grown over the years and as you approach by road it has the appearance of a part stone, part timber Breton mansion, whereas from the coast you can see its panoramic modern windows and balconies. The Ti Al Lannec is extremely comfortable and welcoming, with cosy lounges, a bar, and a restaurant that enjoys superb views over the coast and south-facing garden and terrace. In spite of its 33 rooms, there is a homely atmosphere and one in which relaxation and rest come very easily, helped by the indoor swimming pool and fitness centre with jacuzzi, sauna, hammam, fitness and massage treatments. The comfortable bedrooms are furnished individually with care and thought and enhanced by the wonderful prints and paintings that adorn the walls. Although they vary in size, most are spacious and some face the coast with sea views and balconies; all have a private bathroom, telephone, television and hair-dryer. A lift serves all floors, so the hotel is suitable for partially disabled guests too. Ti Al Lannec is very popular with regular guests in the summer, so early booking is to be advised.

    Hôtel Anne de Bretagne
With a harbour-front plot in La Plaine-sur-Mer in Brittany, the four-star Hôtel Anne de Bretagne is a seaside villa with true coastal charm. This is a Relais & Chateaux property with an intimate atmosphere that has been carefully crafted as the labour of love between husband and wife, chef and sommelier duo Michèle and Philippe Vételé. The white-washed wooden structure is the first hint of a carefree modern marine style that is consistent throughout the property, as inspired by views of La Gravette port. This influence continues into the 20 guestrooms, which are radiant in their brightness. Pristine white walls, curtains and bed linens are contrasted with statement furnishings. Vast windows open onto terraces and balconies with views of the gardens and the heated swimming pool, or across the harbour: slide open your patio door and allow your room to be filled with the wash of the sea and the gentle clanging of the rocking masts. Dubbed a ‘Hotel-Restaurant’ by its owners, the Hôtel Anne de Bretagne’s restaurant, which serves an appetising menu of fresh, inventive cuisine centred around locally-sourced seafood such as wild clams and oysters, has been awarded two Michelin stars. Individually selected wines from Michèle Vételé’s 20,000 bottle collection accompanies the food. The contemporary setting of the dining room is mirrored in the minimalism of the food’s presentation, making the experience an artful, sensory one. On fine days, you are even invited to dine amid the flowers and gentle hush of the waves on the sun-emblazoned terrace.
