A five-star Caribbean resort with an environmental conscience, the Four Seasons Resort Nevis offers a unique opportunity to participate in local Sea Turtle conservancy work. Idyllic beaches by day and clandestine turtle-watching by night, nature and wildlife lovers will delight in this enchanting experience - from the nesting of these gentle giants to memorable scenes of newly-hatched sea turtles stumbling their route to the shore.
There could be no more indulgent setting for this environmental adventure; Four Seasons Resort Nevis basks in the glorious natural landscape of a relatively obscure Caribbean island, known for its volcanic terrain and absolute tranquillity. Within the resort, golden beaches and vivid waters front an arrangement of two-storey dwellings that ooze leisurely ease with their archetypal Caribbean architecture. Steeply-sloped, grey-tiled roofing and broad verandas encased by delicate balustrades are dwarfed by a canopy of spindly-trunked palms that tower above shady lawns and exotic vegetation. The lagoon-style beachfront infinity pool is a divine oasis that takes in superb views, surrounded by lazy sunbeds and oversized lounging nooks on a deck decorated by sprinkling of sprouting palms and sporadic bursts of vivid blossom. Cabana-style beach houses are a marvellous addition to the scene; timber huts with white-washed beams, decorative fretwork and shuttered windows that provide shaded spots directly on the beach.
The services and facilities at the Four Seasons Resort Nevis are exhaustive, as befits the hospitality of this remote Caribbean island. From the pampering spa to a scenic golf course, tennis and basketball courts, you will not want for active pursuits. Water sports include colourful snorkelling explorations, waterskiing, wakeboarding, reef tours and paddle boarding. Evenings consist of sumptuous seafood grills in the intimate Coral Grill, casual café-style dining at Neve, exotic eats at the airy pool/beachside Cabana, and West-Indian specialties at the open-air Mango. You may unwind afterwards at the cosy Library Bar with a cocktail in hand, or you could choose to get prepped to embark on the environmental experience of a lifetime!
Sea Turtle Conservation ProgrammeStarted in 2006 in partnership with Nevis Turtle Group and Sea Turtle Conservancy, Four Seasons Resort Nevis plays an important role in maintaining the nesting rituals of the critically endangered Hawksbill Turtles on Nevis Island. Neighbouring Pinney’s Beach is the setting thanks to its unique privilege of hosting this amazing natural phenomenon year-on-year. Beginning with the nesting process in early June and ending with hatching in early November, the resort’s efforts to protect this fragile event are significant. Staff members participate in monitoring and guarding the shores to protect the turtles and during this season guests of the Fours Seasons Resort Nevis are invited to participate too! Guided walks depart every Friday at 9pm, and give the best chance to witness these gentle giants as they shift ashore and secure their eggs in the sand. For a more hands-on contribution, you can join in with tagging, nest digging and nest marking, all of which has a crucial importance by monitoring the annual flux of returning turtles to Nevis’ shores. But early November has to be the highlight of the whole project as nesting season brings the opportunity to spot baby turtles as they emerge from the nest and hobble towards the waters. This is a touching sight that is always so rewarding for all those involved.
Children who attend Four Seasons Resort Nevis’ ‘Kids for all Seasons’ kids’ club will receive a complimentary membership to the Sea Turtle Conservancy and are automatically enrolled in the Adopt-a-Turtle programme. The experience is really educational for little ones, who will gain an insight into the protection of this natural habitat. If they are lucky enough to witness the sea turtles’ night time ritual, this will be a holiday to be remembered for years to come.
