  • For the Love of the Automobile

    Maranello Ferrari Museum

    Modena

    Museo Dell'Automobile, Turin

For the love of the automobile

Turin is the birthplace of much of modern Italy and is also the source of some of Italy’s most famous brands of cars, furniture, pens and boats. Whilst the spirit of Italian culture is perhaps associated with Florence and Rome, the practicalities of design and production have sprung out of Turin. Let your fascinating love affair with the automobile start here in Turin, which has witnessed the birth of renowned brands such as Fiat and Pininfarina before exploring another famous brand near Milan: Alfa Romeo. Near Modena you can be entranced by the stallion of motorcars, Ferrari, whilst another exclusive marque, Lamborghini, has its origins nearby too. So, within the space of less than two hundred miles, you have the places of genesis of some of the most famous and romantic cars of all time.

    DAY BY DAY ITINERARY

    DAY ONE
    Arrive Turin

Fly into Turin and collect your hire-car if required (or ask us to arrange a private transfer to the hotel and then collect the car at the end of your stay in Turin). Your hotel for two nights is the Grand Hotel Sitea (car parking is available nearby) in the city centre. Spend the rest of the day settling in and exploring the heart of the city.

    DAY TWO
    In Turin

Today the first visit on the list is of the Museo dell’Automobile, then over to Lingotto, which was the original Fiat factory, which is now an art museum but with the race track still on the roof, and then a must for an outstanding range of new and used cars (Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Abarth and Jeep) for viewing and purchase is the Mirafiori motor village – a huge showroom on the site of the old Fiat Mirafiori factory. Another place to visit if you are a group of 5 or more people is the Pininfarina museum (must be pre-booked). The car museum is closed on Monday afternoons and Tuesday mornings and the Pinacoteca Giovanni e Marella Agnelli at the Lingotto is closed on Mondays. If you have time to spare then there is still plenty to visit in Turin: the Egyptian museum, the Turin Shroud, the Mole Antonelliana, the Juventus stadium and museum, the Museum of urban art and the numerous cafés and chocolate shops on the Via Po and the Piazza San Carlo.

    DAY THREE
Turin – Milan for Alfa Romeo – Modena

Leave Turin and north of Milan stop to visit the Alfa Romeo museum (closed Tuesdays). It is just off the A8 so easily accessible without having to go into Milan, which means you can arrive in Modena in time to explore before dinner. The hotel we suggest in Modena, the Canalgrande has parking outside, or there is another hotel we work with, the Rechigi Park Hotel, just outside the centre.

    DAY FOUR
In Modena – a Ferrari day

Today devote to Ferrari and there is plenty to provide excitement. In Modena there is the Ferrari museum with driving simulator where you can book a museum and track entrance that gives you 15 mins of laps in a car and then just 20 kms from Modena is the Maranello museum and factory, where you can both visit and book a tour by bus of the factory. If you want the tour, it has to be booked in advance. Enjoy the rest of the time in Modena, home to balsamic vinegar and tortellini as well as the Osteria Francescana, where chef Bottura has 3 Michelin stars.

    DAY FIVE
In Modena – visit Lamborghini, Maserati museum and Pagani

Just 17 kms from Modena is home to the marque of the raging bull, Lamborghini. Their museum features key models over the years including racing cars and F1, SUVs and Urus and offers a guided tour of the production line. Open Mondays to Saturdays. On the edge of Modena is the Umberto Panini Collection, a museum where 19 vintage Maseratis are displayed. Just to the south of Modena is the location of the sports car manufacturer, Pagani, where you can visit the showroom and take a guided tour.

    DAY SEVEN
    Return to UK

There is time on the way back to the airport in Bologna to visit the Ducati museum and factory near Bologna (not far from the airport). You need to book for a guided tour but Ducati celebrated its 90th birthday in 2016 and has an amazing array of motorcycles through the years.

    We include:
    • British Airways flights London Gatwick to Turin, returning from Bologna to London Gatwick
    • Two nights’ bed and breakfast at the Grand Hotel Sitea, Turin in a Classic room
    • Three nights’ bed and breakfast at the Hotel Canalgrande, Modena in a Classic room
    • Hire of a group B car for the duration of the holiday

Prices from about £1,220 per person
(entrance fees are not included and pre-booking is recommended where possible)
