With so much diversity across the country, a tour around Vietnam will encompass pristine beaches, bustling atmospheric towns and cities, and unique temples, paddy fields, and waterways. Here, we have compiled our personal recommendations for day trips, as well as useful contextual and practical facts.Vietnam Country FactsCapital: HanoiPopulation: 89.7 millionOfficial language: VietnameseClimate: Situated in both a tropical and temperate zone, Vietnam experiences strong monsoons, high humidity, and good year round sunshine. In the mountainous areas, the climate becomes more temperate. In the north of the country, May-October are the hottest, driest months, while in Central Vietnam this is between January and August. In the south, the weather is dry and hot from November to April. Peak temperatures regularly exceed 35°C, while wet, cold seasons dip to 17°C.Local highlights• Boat trips on Ha Long Bay – adventurous visitors can explore the caves and secret lagoons by kayak, though luxury boat cruises, on traditional Vietnamese ‘junk’ with iconic yellow or orange sails, are also popular.• Long, sweeping beaches of Nha Trang – these beaches have beautiful white sand, thatched parasols, and leaning palm trees that create a coastal destination that goes almost unrivalled for its beauty.• Vietnamese cuisine - bursting with fresh, vivid spices, Vietnamese cuisine is wholly unique; dishes are not often spicy, and revolve around noodles and seafood, with some interesting takes on European cuisine. • Historic, riverside Hoi An – quieter than the major cities in Vietnam, with less traffic, Hoi An has superb galleries in the Old and French Quarters, and is perfectly placed for cycling excursions out into the paddy fields.• Full-moon ‘Legendary Nights’ in Hoi An – at these times, the Old Town is transformed into a magical land of silk lanterns; this is a brilliant opportunity to experience some authentic Vietnamese culture.• Phong Nha Cave – this is the largest and most impressive cave in the country, with a sandy beach-like area; pools and caverns are lit by an ethereal blue light and stalactites hang from the ceiling.• Cycling through Ho Chi Minh City – in this city, bike is king; be it motorbikes, scooters, or push bikes, the streets of Ho Chi Minh are incredibly lively; this is also a thrilling way to see the cultural and historic sights of the city.• Cham architecture of Quy Nhon – this architectural style is prevalent across the country, but is most impressive in Quy Nhon; the red stone forms towers with gaping, tall arched doorways, and the roofs seems to be formed from multiple layers, each of which is intricately designed.• The rugged mountain retreat of Sapa – home to a plethora of minority tribes, Sapa is an excellent place to witness the reality of rural life in Vietnam, and to see the striking colourful clothes and style as well as the traditional village houses; Sapa is also the gateway to the Tonkinese Alps. • The mountain town of Dalat – Dalat is known for its scenic location, on the edge of a mountain lake with plentiful dramatic waterfalls that tumble down smooth tiered rock faces that can be safely walked across.• Cat Tien National Park – a lush refuge for city dwellers, with ample hiking and bird-watching, plus elephants, crocodiles, and the endangered Javan rhino. • River trips on the Mekong river – past bustling and colourful river towns, sleepy villages, hundreds of individual moored fishing boats, and floating markets.• Beautiful beaches around Danang – this is a popular stop-over for those wanting a few days beside the sea, offering a wide stretch of white sand punctuated by small handcrafted wooden boats.• Hue – the old imperial capital and now the intellectual, cultural, and spiritual heart of Vietnam.Getting out and aboutThe main mode of transport in our touring itineraries is by car. Trains can be quite slow but offer a relaxing way to travel. Vietnam has an enormous number of rivers but the most important by far is the Mekong River and its tributaries. Scenic day trips by boat are possible on rivers in Hoi An, Danang, Hue, Tam Coc and even Saigon, but only in the Mekong Delta are boats used as a practical means of transport. Cruising the islands of Ha Long Bay is a must for all visitors to northern Vietnam.Travel arrangementsThere are international airports in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Danang. Vietnam Airlines are the only direct airline from London to Vietnam, flying into Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Several scheduled airlines fly indirect including Thai Airways and Malaysian Airlines. The flight time is approximately 13 to 15 hours.
