Impressions of Portugal: Victoria's thoughts on her trip to the Algarve
The Algarve continues to prove itself as a highly desirable destination for summer holidays, with an attractive combination of excellent beaches, short flight durations, a scenic Nature Reserve, and good family and sports facilities. In December 2016, Victoria, our Portuguese specialist, visited a selection of our new hotels, as well as our old favourites. Here, she shares what she learned and her recommendations. The highlights of her trip were visiting such high-quality hotels and an early morning stroll to explore the beautiful beaches that the Algarve has to offer. I was also impressed that the sun was still shining bright in December!
Which hotel really stood out for you?
One of my favourite hotels was the Pine Cliffs Resort, because of the range of accommodation on offer, from one- and two-bedroom ocean suites to residences and townhouses. Moorish influences in some rooms reflect the history of the area, particularly in the tiled headboards. This hotel offers such a wide range of accommodation to suit all groups of travellers. The beach, Praia da Falesia, is also very impressive. Prices for the Pine Cliffs Resort from £1,880 per person for 7 nights in a Premium Deluxe room, with flights, private transfers, and bed and breakfast.
Which is the best hotel for sports?
The Martinhal Sagres struck me as the best resort for sports holidays. Sagres is the most western point of Europe and is great for windsurfing. The resort has a water sports centre on the beach that organises activities such as windsurfing, kayaking, stand up paddle-boarding, and surfing. Walking tours can also be arranged in the local Nature Reserve, where you can discover a variety of nature and historical landmarks. It is also the perfect place to hire a bike, mountain bike, or road bike, or go on a guided cycling tour. There are four golf courses located within 40 minutes of the Martinhal, and the hotel can provide private lessons on request.
Do you have any tips for first-time visitors?
I would highly recommend hiring a car to go out and explore the local towns. The roads are very easy to navigate, and there are plenty of unique and interesting towns to explore that will make your stay more cultural.
Which of the new resorts offers the best value for money?
The EPIC SANA offers great value for money, with a huge amount of choice, activities, and luxury style. The accommodation is divided between 3 areas, the main hotel, garden suites, and the residence, so there is plenty of flexibility. The residence is best for families as it has its own shared pool and restaurant. Studios and apartments offer complete self-sufficiency, but with the option of using the resort’s facilities. The brunch between June and September entitles guests to unlimited food and soft drinks in Lima bar between 08:00 – 16:00. Prices for the EPIC SANA from £930 per person for 7 nights in a Deluxe room, with flights, private transfers, and bed and breakfast.
Which hotel would you recommend for a spa break?
The Blue&Green Vilalara Thalassa Resort offers state-of-the-art wellness and anti-ageing solutions, from treatment rooms and terraces in stunning secluded locations. They offer a range of different programmes, along with a Thalassotherapy centre. Spa treatments include exfoliation, weight loss drainage, massages, and facials. Prices for the Blue&Green Vilalara Thalassa Resort from £1,160 per person for 7 nights in a Junior Suite, with flights, private transfers, and bed and breakfast.
Would you say that it is essential to be on the coast in the Algarve, or is it worth considering staying a little further inland?
Many of our hotels sit beside the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve, such as the Martinhal Quinta Resort, which is a beautiful alternative to being right on the beach, though the coast is never more than a short walk or drive away. The Park is excellent for bird-watching, long walks, or cycling trips, and lets you see a completely different side to this popular beach destination. Prices for the Conrad Algarve from £940 per person for 7 nights in a Deluxe room, with flights, private transfers, and bed and breakfast.
