This region also benefits from a sunny, warm and dry climate and is renowned for the startlingly beautiful scenery of the Marlborough Sounds, a landscape of water and islands, inlets and lush vegetation created by river valleys being drowned by the sea, accessible by boat, kayak and on foot and the extensive vineyards near Blenheim in the Wairau Valley, backed by the arid-looking Richmond mountains.
