This hotel is an excellent choice for exploring Tuscany, just 30 minutes from Pisa, and serves as an ideal base for exploring the coastline, including the stunning Cinque Terre region.
Combine this with our Puccini Opera Festival Holiday
We especially recommend this hotel for the opera lovers amongst our readers since this is an ideal place from which to enjoy our bespoke opera holiday to the Puccini Opera Festival in Torre del Lago itself. The open-air concert is a mere 18-minute ride from the hotel and remember, we include a hire car to make travel easier!
The itinerary for this includes a four-night stay and tickets to one performance. The festival is a celebration of the life and works of renowned Italian composer Giacomo Puccini. As such, be prepared to marvel at witness world-class performances of Puccini’s iconic operas, Tosca and Turandot.
Puccini, born in Lucca in 1858, spent much of his most creative years from 1891 at Torre del Lago, a quaint community approximately 15 miles from Lucca. By 1900, he had acquired land and constructed a lakeside villa, now known as the Villa Museo Puccini. He resided there until 1921, when pollution from nearby peat works prompted his relocation to Viareggio, a short distance away.
After his death, the villa was transformed into a mausoleum, where Puccini was laid to rest in the chapel, alongside his wife and son. Today, the Villa Museo Puccini is owned by his granddaughter, Simonetta Puccini, and is open to the public, offering a fascinating glimpse into the composer’s life and legacy.
Final thoughts
Turn-of-the-century Italy was undergoing profound social and political upheaval. Puccini’s operas carry a sense of this impending drama and never fails to amaze spectators with the passion put into the performances by all those participating.
