About Singapore
An Expressions tailor-made holiday to Singapore is the chance to experience a heady mix of culture, technology, cuisine and urban landscapes. Founded in 1819 as an outpost of the British East India Company, Singapore today is a fascinating mix of cultures and temperaments, with immigrants from China and Malaysia, India and the West creating a rich, heady cocktail reflected in its architecture, with skyscrapers and subways sitting side by side with rickety riverside food stalls and colonial hotels. Home to the legendary Raffles Hotel, Singapore is equally famous today for its bustling Chinatown and Little India, with its mouth-watering cuisine drawing on influences from all round the Pacific. Of course, it’s not all about shopping and eating, Singapore Slings and financial markets. Even here, after Monaco the second densest country on the planet, outdoor activities abound, with Singapore’s centre still sheltering sparkling reservoirs and leafy forests, with fantastic cycling and walking where all you can hear is monkeys in the branches above. Elsewhere, sailing and windsurfing is also a wonderful way to escape the urban bustle. With exquisite cuisine and a fascinating cultural mix, top-notch hotels and stylish restaurants and cafes, and superb walking tours and a thriving modern art scene, the Lion City is a superb, high energy escape.
Highlights of Singapore
Singapore Sling at the Raffles Hotel; Little India, wall to wall in temples and food stalls, spices and saree shops; Hawker-centre, with simple but exquisite food stalls; the night safari at Singapore Zoo; mountain biking and walking around Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, MacRitchie Reservoir and Pulau Ubin; tea, Chinese opera and fantastic cuisine in Chinatown; tropical Botanic Gardens; massage on Orchard Road; the Esplanade’s Theatres on the Bay; river cruises; riverside cafes.
Travel around Singapore
Singapore has fantastic public transport, with a tangled web of bus and train (MRT) routes taking you to the doorsteps of most sights. There are regular ferry services from Sentosa to other southern islands, and from Changi Village to Pulau Ubin. You can also take river cruises, or boat cruises around the harbour. Singapore’s bus service should be the envy of the world. You rarely have to wait more than a few minutes for a bus, and they’ll take you almost anywhere.
