Ayurveda Pavilions in Negombo is a small hotel designed for guests wanting in-house Ayurveda therapy to balance and rejuvenate mind, body and soul. Located at Negombo on the west coast of Sri Lanka, Ayurveda Pavilions is made up of 12 well-appointed villas built to blend in with their peaceful natural surroundings, each with its own garden and treatment room ensuring maximum privacy. The designs are taken from an ancestral 'Midula' house, with a traditional veranda, courtyards and medicinal plants. Focusing on Ayurveda therapies, there are a number of signature treatments that guests can experience at Ayurveda Pavilions, including the Sincro Massage, where two therapists massage the skin at the same time, and a Herbal Mask treatment designed to improve the skin structure. A team of experienced doctors is available and in keeping with Ayurvedic principles, meals and beverages are prepared by specially trained chefs. Sri Lankan breakfasts and individually created menus are served following the Ayurveda concept, using fresh herbs, vegetables, fruits and seafood and according to each guest's body type. Guests at Ayurveda Pavilions can also enjoy yoga and meditation, and swimming in the pool. The more active can visit the Ayurveda Pavilions resort's sister hotel Jetwing Beach for beach activities, squash, a gym and tennis courts. Although you can walk across the road to the beachfront from Ayurveda Pavilions, it is in a street location and does not have sea views.

The journey and how you get there

For a holiday to Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions in Sri Lanka, our clients fly to Colombo, usually with Sri Lankan Airways on a direct flight from London Heathrow (or with Emirates from other UK airports via Dubai). This hotel is 25 minutes’ drive from Colombo airport and is either a stay in its own right, in which case you will have a car transfer to the hotel and back, or it is the first or last stop on a tailor-made touring holiday accompanied by a driver-guide.

About Negombo and west coast

An Expressions holiday to Sri Lanka's Negombo offers travellers the chance to experience Sri Lankan heritage and culture. Negombo is an important fishing town with Portuguese and Dutch colonial heritage. It is also a popular holiday destination because of its proximity to the international airport and its beachfront location. Due to the Portuguese influx back in the 16th century, the inhabitants are predominantly Catholic. The country’s Dutch legacy is seen in the remains of the grand Dutch Fort and the Dutch canal (now called Hamilton Canal) which runs from Colombo to Chilaw via Negombo. Although large parts of the canal are in disrepair, it is being revived and you can see gaily-painted boats using it as a waterway. The beaches at Negombo are wide and good for beach walking, although it is a struggle to keep them clean as urban debris washes ashore daily. The currents can be strong here, so it is better to swim in the hotel pool. It is fascinating to see how the fishing industry dominates life in coastal Negombo - the fish market, the auctions, the stalls along the beach. The tourist resort area of Negombo, known as the Golden Mile, caters to a wide spectrum of holidaymakers on a range of budgets, mostly the mid to the lower end. It’s lively at night and has bars, restaurants, tourist shops and fashion outlets, selling everything from flip-flops to colourful batiks and handlooms.

Highlights of Negombo

For nature lovers and birdwatchers there are the Muthurajawela wetlands where four varieties of kingfisher are frequently seen, as well as Negombo Lagoon. Offshore wrecks and a reef provide spots for diving (November to April, when the seas are calmer). PADI instructors, some other water sports and fishing trips are also available. Whale-watching and dolphin-watching boat trips are possible further north off Kalpitya, though this is a 3-4 hours drive away.

Cultural highlights of Negombo

In and around Negombo there are plenty of things to see and do: Dutch Fort remains; St Mary’s Church; Angurukaramulla Buddhist temple (murals); Fish markets, fishing boats and port; Select fresh seafood for your lunch or dinner; The Dutch canal (called Hamilton canal) and Maha Oya river – boat trip; Muthurajawela wetlands and Negombo Lagoon for birdwatching and nature; Some water sports and diving; November to April; Fishing; Tourist shops and restaurants (mostly mid-lower end), fashion shops; Inland to the archaeological site of Dambadeniya; Sri Lanka’s commercial capital of Colombo is 40 km away, offering a range of shops, restaurants and sightseeing.

Climate in Negombo

With daytime temperatures of between 26° C and 33° C, Negombo is hot and humid, though sea breezes cool and refresh the air. The evenings are slightly cooler. The main monsoon brings unsettled weather between May and August.

The hotel employs renowned doctors, specialists in Ayurvedic therapy, to guide you in strengthening the roots of your wellbeing. The Ayurveda system is based on 'The Knowledge of Life', a thousand year old tradition that originates from India. Based on the presumption that health is more than the absence of illness, its gentle, holistic approach to wellbeing encompasses all areas of life. According to Ayurvedic principles, the physical body, our state of mind and energies in the environment we live in are all intertwined and have a direct influence on our state of energetic balance. Any imbalance in these energies causes discomfort or illness. All physical, mental and spiritual functions of the human body are influenced by three basic bio-energetic powers: Kapha, Vatha and Pitta. From these, a unique system of medical therapies and treatments has been developed that has proved highly effective in the treatment of chronic disease. A wide range of physical conditions can be treated by Ayurveda, for example backache and arthritis and also psychological conditions such as stress. From an aesthetic point of view, Ayurveda also offers beauty benefits like reducing the appearance of wrinkles, weight loss and promoting healthy hair and scalp. You will be treated using a selection of natural herbs, whose curative properties have undergone extensive clinical and pharmacological safety tests. Treatments are personalised according to individual needs.

Signature spa treatments

Sincro Massage A body treatment where two therapists treat the skin to a soothing massage at the same time.

Herbal Mask Treatment The body is enveloped in a nourishing mask made from a selection of natural herbs in order to promote the enzymes responsible for metabolic skin processes. The treatment is designed to improve skin structure and relieve itchy, irritated skin.

Shiroabayanga A soothing massage treatment using essential oils on the head that is said to prevent headaches, hair loss and premature greying.

Shirodhara Oil is poured on the third eye positioned in the middle of the forehead which initiates a soothing and relaxing effect to promote wellbeing. It can cure long-standing insomnia and can be effective in reducing the frequency of epileptic fits.
