Luxury hotel stays at Bovey Castle, Dartmoor, Devon
Bovey Castle is a 5-star luxury, country resort occupying an historic building dating from 1907, set within the Dartmoor National Park. The castle was commissioned by the son and heir of stationery magnate, WH Smith and was constructed in the style of a lavish neo-Elizabethan manor house, but by 1930 it had become an hotel, operated by the Great Western Railway. The castle is a few miles south of the small, Dartmoor, market town of Moretonhampstead and stands on a slight hill with terraces affording beautiful views over the Dartmoor landscape. Inside the interior is elegant and lavish with a wood-panelled bar and an imposing Jacobean-style staircase. Today there are 60 bedrooms located in the original building and the courtyard mews, as well as 22 self-catering lodges within the extensive grounds. Bedrooms vary in size and situation but all are comfortably furnished with restful decoration and contemporary comforts as befit a 5-star hotel. There is a choice of dining at Bovey Castle between the Great Western Restaurant which offers a comfortable yet elegant atmosphere with a smart edge, and Smith’s Brasserie, which is more informal, cosy and inviting. Both restaurants source their produce locally with local game, Exmoor beef and seafood from the shores off Devon and Cornwall, featuring heavily on the menu. At Smith’s there is outdoor dining on the terrace in fine weather and nearby is the Oak Bar offering aperitifs and digestifs. A great bonus is the spa with indoor pool, with some times restricted to adults only. There are numerous outdoor pursuits and activities available, some free of charge and some at a cost, including golf, tennis, archery, horse-riding, fly-fishing, cider making, brass rubbing and falconry lessons. This is all on your doorstep with a stay here at Bovey Castle, in addition to the wonderful wealth of sites to visit and pursuits available on and near Dartmoor itself.

About Great Britain
Great Britain is both an island and a political grouping of countries consisting of England, Scotland and Wales. This small island contains a wealth of diversity of geography and topography, peoples and dialects, local architecture and traditions and a rich history that has been world-facing and world-interacting for thousands of years. From the traces of the first inhabitants of the island in prehistoric times, through the colonisation by the Romans, invasions by Angles, Saxons, Vikings and Normans, to the establishment of a Parliament and constitutional monarchy, Great Britain is fascinating to explore. The landscape varies every few miles, with dales and vales, moors and coastline never far away and here and there you find proud post-industrial cities, flourishing cathedral cities, gentle market towns and picturesque villages, perhaps with a village green, pond, cricket pitch and ancient church, as well as the local pub. Traditions of local heritage feature strongly with festivals and pageants, local arts and crafts and artisan produce. Within any one region or county of this small island, there is always something else to discover.
If you are interested in a holiday home to rent in Devon, we can recommend this historic cottage in the picturesque village of Dittisham on the River Dart near Dartmouth: Rosemary Cottage Dittisham.
