Luxury hotel stays at the Horn of plenty, Tavistock, Devon
The Horn of Plenty is a boutique, country-house, 4-star hotel of charm and character situated amidst rolling countryside with views of the Tamar Valley, a short drive from the historic, market town of Tavistock, on the border of Devon and Cornwall. The main building dates from 1866 when it was built for James Richards, who was in charge of the copper and tin mining operation in the Tamar Valley. The house became a restaurant in 1967 and that was the start of a very long connection with fine-dining here, with the founder, Sonia Stevenson being the first British woman to be awarded a Michelin star. The restaurant enjoys widespread acclaim and has 2 AA rosettes; the dishes are constructed around exciting flavour combinations inspired by seasonal ingredients and local produce and the restaurant is open every day, for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Packed lunches can be ordered which is especially useful if you’re thinking of a long Dartmoor hike. Monday night is Pot Luck Night, which is a tradition that has lived on for over 50 years, and based on a time when food deliveries happened on Tuesdays, so by Monday evening, a menu was created using only the remaining produce. Today the Pot Luck Night Menu is a reduced selection at a reduced price, without compromising quality. Over the years since it first opened, additional bedrooms have been added. Today there are 16 bedrooms, with four in the main house, six in the original coach house and six rooms in a new coach house, built in 2014. Rooms vary in size but most have balconies looking out over the Tamar Valley or the local countryside. Neutral tones of walls and natural floors are enlivened by colourful cushions, throws and bedspreads. Massage, facials and other beauty treatments can be arranged by a team of local, experienced therapists. The Horn of Plenty is an ideal base, combining comfortable accommodation, lovely views and fine dining, from which to explore Devon and Cornwall.

About Great Britain
Great Britain is both an island and a political grouping of countries consisting of England, Scotland and Wales. This small island contains a wealth of diversity of geography and topography, peoples and dialects, local architecture and traditions and a rich history that has been world-facing and world-interacting for thousands of years. From the traces of the first inhabitants of the island in prehistoric times, through the colonisation by the Romans, invasions by Angles, Saxons, Vikings and Normans, to the establishment of a Parliament and constitutional monarchy, Great Britain is fascinating to explore. The landscape varies every few miles, with dales and vales, moors and coastline never far away and here and there you find proud post-industrial cities, flourishing cathedral cities, gentle market towns and picturesque villages, perhaps with a village green, pond, cricket pitch and ancient church, as well as the local pub. Traditions of local heritage feature strongly with festivals and pageants, local arts and crafts and artisan produce. Within any one region or county of this small island, there is always something else to discover.
If you are interested in a holiday home to rent in Devon, we can recommend this historic cottage in the picturesque village of Dittisham on the River Dart near Dartmouth: Rosemary Cottage Dittisham.
