The Rocco Forte Hotel de Russie acquired its name during the 19th century when it was frequented by Russian dignitaries visiting Rome. The original palazzo was designed in 1816 by Valadier whose idea it was to incorporate the external courtyard at the entrance to the building; during the rest of the century more floors were added, and the extensive terraced gardens were landscaped. Over the next decades, the hotel became an enduring haunt of artists, writers and politicians. Jean Cocteau dubbed it ‘paradise on earth’ in 1917. Its location at the heart of the most fashionable part of the Italian capital, with the Spanish Steps a few minutes away on foot, is highly desirable. Today, its verdant terraces with its rose bushes, orange trees and mature pine are a real feature of the hotel, providing a shady oasis amidst the vibrancy of the city.
