Elsewhere, board the vintage TSS Earnslaw for a special steamship cruise on the glassy waters of Lake Wakatipu, or swap your boat for a 4-wheel-drive adventure in search of the infamous Skipper's Canyon Road, a narrow cut in the middle of a sheer cliff face guaranteed to thrill daredevils. In this relaxing sanctuary, it is hard to believe that you are just seven minutes from the bustle of Queenstown. In the common areas, this theme of a relaxing sanctuary is continued. For example, Matakauri Spa offers a wonderful space for rejuvenation, situated on the edge of a pine forest and featuring uninterrupted views of Lake Wakatipu and towering Cecil Peak. With two treatment rooms a private deck, a sauna, hot tub and an outdoor heated pool, you will be sure to find an oasis in calm in which to recover from a full day exploring. The evenings are to be spent enjoying the bounty of the region. Here, head chef Jonathan Rogers serves an exquisite take on modern New Zealand cuisine. Guests can choose from a variety of spaces to sample the menu, each offering a new perspective on the region's panoramic landscape. Later, be sure to retire to a suitably welcoming perch, with a glass of New Zealand red, and simply admire your luxurious surrounds.

Matakauri Lodge's range of 13 accommodation options feature clean lines in glass, stone and timber, and incredible views over the surrounding landscape. Four suites are located within the main lodge, whilst the others are nestled privately on the banks of Lake Wakatipu.

Lodge Room Located inside the main lodge of Matakauri, these entry level rooms feature a seating area and offer incredible views of the 'big three': The Remarkables, Cecil and Walter Peak
Suite Just a short walk from the lodge, these lakefront suites are spacious and beautiful, offering private balconies overlooking Lake Wakatipu. Two are also located within the main lodge building.
Deluxe Suite The most luxurious of the suites, these rooms are wonderfully spacious are split with the bedroom on the mezzanine floor. All but one of these suites are located apart from the main lodge.
Owner's Cottage This exclusive and spacious villa is perfect for families and large groups, and offers magnificent views over the Remarkables, Cecil and Walter Peak mountain ranges. Also included are a spacious main lounge, study, kitchen and dining room. Each of the four bedrooms contains its own private balcony, and there is also an outdoor courtyard area with a barbecue, and an infinity edge hot tub on the main balcony.

About Otago and Fiordland

An Expressions tailor-made holiday to Otago and Fiordland is a chance to explore just some of the magnificent natural scenery New Zealand has to offer. These southerly regions of New Zealand are proud possessors of some of the most awe-inspiring and breath-taking natural scenery in a country of outstanding natural wonders. It is on the whole a landscape of mountain peaks, ridges and valleys, glacial lakes and fiords. With very few roads because of the terrain, the area is very natural with miles of it feeling very remote. At its heart is the resort of Queenstown, renowned as the centre of a multitude of adventure sports, with not only skiing in winter but as home to bungy jumping as well as now all sorts of sports including jet boating, white-water rafting, skydiving, hang-gliding and parapenting. The landscape is one of yellow-brown-green tussock-covered hills and rugged mountain peaks, with sparkling blue-green lakes. The lakesides often have a semi tropical feel with cabbage trees and New Zealand ferns. On the western coast are the magnificent fiords, flanked by steep mountains coated in rainforest and known for a profusion of wildlife including fur seals, dolphins and penguins.
