Additional hotels of charm and character in Alsace, Provence, Normandy and the Ile de Re
We have chosen additional hotels of charm and character in selected regions across France and we are pleased now to feature these as holidays in their own right, or as part of combinations with hotels in other regions.
Hotel Regent Contades, Strasbourg
This is a cosy hotel occupying a magnificent 19th century building. Standing on the edge of the city centre, overlooking the River Ill, this luxurious residence in neoclassical style dates from the 19th Century and is today a 4-star hotel with 48 rooms and suites. Cosy and contemporary inside, the Régent Contades is a short walk from the Place Kléber and the cathedral.
Hotel & Spa Regent Petite France, Strasbourg
This is an iconic hotel occupying am historic, 17th century former mill, situated on the waterside in the picturesque Petite France area of the city of Strasbourg. The area around the hotel is pedestrianised. Bedrooms are comfortable and cosy and there is a wonderful restaurant with waterside terrace. The city centre is 5-10 minutes’ walk.
Hotel Chais Monnet & Spa, Cognac
This superb 5-star hotel is a fusion of the ultra-modern and the traditions of the region and its wine making heritage. The Chais is the original winery of the House of Monnet, founded in 1838 and whose emblem is a salamander. The hotel today has 92 rooms, a gastronomic restaurant, a brasserie, a jazz bar and a spa with indoor swimming pool. The hotel is situated in the centre of the attractive town of Cognac, within walking distance of the cognac houses, and the town centre with its pale, grey-blond-stone houses.
The boutique, 5-star Hotel de Toiras is a Relais & Chateaux member with 20 rooms on the side of the port in Saint-Martin-de-Ré. There is a gourmet restaurant, dining outside on the terrace, and a cosy lounge. Bedrooms vary in size but are luxuriously furnished in fabrics of relaxing shades with a traditional French feel. Guests can use the garden and outdoor pool of the sister-hotel, the Villa Clarisse, about 3 minutes’ walk away.
Hotel le Pigonnet, Aix-en-Provence
Le Pigonnet is a discreet address in a residential area near the University but just 10 minutes’ walk from the centre. The low-rise house, evocative of a provençal villa, with green shutters and terracotta roof, is today a boutique 5-star hotel with 45 rooms and suites. A cherished highlight of the hotel is the garden, an oasis of greenery, fountains and sculptures. The gourmet restaurant combines indoor with outdoor with tables beside the alley of horse-chestnut trees. A charming place from which to explore Aix and Provence.
Hotel la Pinede Plage, La Croix-Valmer
A 4-star boutique, Mediterranean-style hotel with 32 rooms, La Pinède Plage nestles amongst pine trees right on the famous Gigaro beach on the St-Tropez peninsula. The hotel has belonged to the same family for over 60 years and from modest beginnings, the guest today is greeted by freshly renovated rooms, a bar and restaurant that face the sea, an outdoor heated swimming pool, tennis court and water sports. This 4-star hotel reflects the traditional charm and simplicity of beachside summer living that first attracted so many people to these shores.
