Out and about nearby
Aix-en-Provence is an ancient town reflecting the history of Provence through the centuries and is an attractive, regional, cultural and artistic hub. Museums in the town include the Granet Museum of painting, sculpture and archaeology, the Hotel de Caumont, an 18th century gem which hosts two major annual exhibitions of painting, and Cézanne’s studio. The main thoroughfare is the Cours Mirabeau, a boulevard lined with shops and restaurants shaded by tall plane trees. The Cathedral of Saint-Sauveur has Gothic influences and wonderful carved doors. The traditions and history of Aix can be seen at the Musée Estienne de Sain Jean, housed in a 17th century mansion. In the town centre is the Place de l’Hotel de Ville, with the town hall dating from the 15th century, an old corn exchange and a fountain with a Roman column topped with a globe encased in golden laurel. In the Terrain des Peintres, you can view the famous Montagne Sainte Victoire seeking the same inspiration that Cézanne found here for his work. Three days a week there is a market on the Cours Mirabeau which combines local food products, fruit, vegetables, garments and artisan goods. Nearby you have the glorious landscape of Provence, including the Luberon, the calanques, and the Camargue. The papal city of Avignon can be reached by TGV train in about 20 minutes.
We particularly loved the Hotel del Sogno on Lake Garda for its character, beauty and amazing views. Great service too from the reception staff. Also they gave us great recommendations for restaurants.Mr and Mrs S, June 2023

Luxury bespoke hotel holidays to Hotel le Pigonnet, Aix-en-Provence, France
Le Pigonnet is a discreet address, a boutique, 5-star hotel with 45 rooms and suites (and a villa) under the ownership of the same family for three generations, in a residential area near the University but just 10 minutes’ walk from the centre. At the end of a driveway lined with plane trees, you’ll find the old pigeon house with its mullioned windows that evoke the original 18th century building which today reflects archetypal provençal style with its green shuttered windows and terracotta roof. Behind the house are breathtakingly beautiful gardens, an oasis of greenery with fountains and stonework that provide hours of delightful relaxation for the guest. The restaurant at the Pigonnet has is highly acclaimed and has been an institution in Aix for almost a hundred years. The interior of the restaurant is sectioned by arcades that open onto the garden. Tables are laid outside in season beside the century-old chestnut tree alley, which in turn provides shade to the dining rooms. The menu is overseen by chef Thierry Balligand who has been at the hotel since 1993. Local market produce dictates the menu and specialities, according to the season, may include organic egg parfait, cream of stuffed artichokes, saffron cockles and chestnut flour gnocchis. There is an imaginative vegetarian menu as well as a fine dining tasting menu, with a choice of wine per course. Cakes and pastries are served at tea-time under the chestnut trees or by the pool, a 65-ft long pool, heated from April to October, situated on the edge of the garden and surrounded by pine trees. Sun beds, chairs and umbrellas are placed on the lawn in the shade. There is both a cosy indoor bar and a garden lounge bar, with light meals being served. Also, in the gardens is the Pétanque ground, providing must-try entertainment whilst you are in Provence. The 45 bedrooms, suites and villa are located in the main building and in a wing of the hotel. Views vary as does the size of the room, furnishings are calm and cosy, and all rooms are equipped with complimentary Wi-Fi and air-conditioning.
