Cezanne exhibition 2025 short break staying in Aix-en-Provence at the Chateau de Fonscolombe
Arrive at Marseille airport, collect your hire-car (or let us book a private car transfer for you) and drive to the Chateau de Fonscolombe, which is about 40 minutes’ drive. During your stay at the Chateau de Fonscolombe we have included a private tasting of three house wines from the Chateau. This can be arranged for when you arrive, but will depend on the times of your flight into Marseille. Let us book you a table for dinner here this evening or for the other two evenings as well.
You have two full days in which to visit the exhibition, Aix-en-Provence and the nearby Luberon countryside as well as making the most of the grounds and facilities of the hotel. You will have a pre-booked ticket for a timed slot to enter the exhibition. The exhibition is held at the Jas de Bouffon, the family home of Cezanne and where he experimented with his work for almost 40 years. On the ground floor, the young Cezanne painted a dozen murals. He also set up his easel in the park, in front of the house, the farm, the woods and the avenue of chestnut trees, the pond and its statues. In total thirty-six oils and seventeen watercolours were made here between 1859 and 1899. The retrospective showcases a hundred pieces illustrating just how much the house influenced his art. It presents Cezanne’s favourite themes: Provençal landscapes, self-portraits, the famous bathers and still lifes in oil and watercolour. The exhibition’s masterpieces include the iconic The Four Seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Bather and the Rocks, Game of Hide and Seek (based on Lancret), Self-Portrait in Front of a Pink Background, The Card Players, Still Life with Cherries and Peaches and The Bathers. Aix-en-Provence is about 20 minutes’ drive from your hotel, with its host of shops, restaurants, galleries and museums: the Musee Granet, the Hotel de Caumont. The museum of old Aix has a display of santons and marionettes. The Lubéron is also a short drive away from the hotel and is renowned for its hill-top villages such as Bonnieux and Apt, vineyards and lavender, markets, antiques, castles, olives, melon and truffles. Nearby is the Mont Sainte-Victoire, renowned for the landscapes by Cézanne. The hotel can arrange a guided hike to this mountain, following in the steps of the artist. A variety of activities are organised that take place at or near the hotel including perfume making, wine blending, truffle hunting, a Paul Cezanne footsteps hike, lavender workshops, and ceramic workshop.
Today you return your hire-car to Marseille airport for your flight home.
